  1. Safety Precautions During Welding

  2. Introduction • Welding machines like plasma cutters, TIG welders, and MIG welders can present many hazards to both those actively at work and those in the vicinity. • It is crucial to be aware of all the risks and dangers of welding, and understand what welding safety precautions you need to take to protect yourself and others.

  3. Welding Hazards • Safety precautions for welding machines need to be taken to avoid hazards that can lead to a serious injury like: • Electrical shock • Burns • Exposure to radiation • Exposure to gases and fumes • Ear damage

  4. Welding Safety Precautions • A MIG welder, TIG welders, or any type of welding machine has critical safety precautions to follow at all times. One misstep can lead to injury or death. This next section goes over the safety precautions you need to follow whenever operating a welding machine.

  5. Personal protection equipment • Proper safety equipment worn by the worker is the first line of defense in preventing welding accidents and prevent damage from UV rays, burns, fumes, or noise.

  6. Helmet and Hood • A helmet with side shields will protect your face and head from UV radiation, chemical burns, loose particles, debris, and hot slag. Never remove your helmet while working. • You should also make it a habit of wearing a fire-resistant hood under your helmet. A hood protects the neck, ears, and back of your head from injury.

  7. Respirator • Wearing a proper respirator will protect you from gases, fumes, and oxides that form when using a welding machine like a MIG welder, plasma cutter, or TIG welders. • You must select a suitable respirator for the project type you are working on for maximum lung safety.

  8. Fire-resistant clothes • Wearing fire-resistant clothing will protect you from heat, radiation, fire, and burns that a welding machine creates. • Never wear synthetic materials that will melt onto the skin when hot. Leather or cotton treated with flame-retardants form a great protective barrier. • Gloves need to be insulated, and flame-resistant. Boots should have a rubber sole, and a steel toe to protect you from electric shock or fallen objects.

  9. Ear protection • Some applications like using a plasma cutter have consistent noise levels of well over 100 decibels. Ear protection is important to dissipate loud noises to prevent permanent hearing loss or damage that causes tinnitus, high blood pressure, or vertigo. • Fire-resistant earmuffs can be worn to keep sparks or metal splatter from entering the ears.

  10. Proper training • Courses or online training will thoroughly go over safety measures, equipment, and techniques for plasma cutters, TIG welders, and MIG welders. • Training should always be taken before beginning any project.

  11. Eliminate flammables from a workspace • Always check your work area for flammable materials that may quickly ignite from sparks or fumes and lead to extensive damage or injury.

  12. Proper ventilation • Ensure you take measures to properly ventilate any gases and fumes to assure a safe environment. • Suitable ventilation paired with a respirator will protect the lungs from pollution exposure.
