MHSC Mandate • Advise the Minister on all occupational health and safety issues in the mining industry relating to legislation, research and promotion • Review and develop legislation for recommendation to the Minister • Promotehealth and safety in the mining industry • Oversee research in relation to health and safety in the mining industry • Liaisewith other bodies concerned with health and safety issues • Advise the Minister on all occupational health and safety issues in the mining industry relating to legislation, research and promotion • Review and develop legislation for recommendation to the Minister • Promote health and safety in the mining industry • Oversee research in relation to health and safety in the mining industry • Liaise with other bodies concerned with health and safety issues

Background • At the Tripartite Stakeholder Leadership Summit in 2003, the mining industry agreed that an action-driven plan was necessary to ensure significant improvements in mine health and safety performance. • The mining industry developed the targets that must be achieved by 2013. The key themes of the actions that were identified are: • Strengthening culture of health and safety • Promoting a learning industry and building capacity • Making workplaces safer and healthier • The year 2013 is the time for reporting and to review performance against the set targets

Submitting the Report • Users must ensure that: • Their submission of the report must be captured individually as per the template for period 2003- 2013. • Inputs must be reviewed by OHS Committee prior to submission. • Once data is submitted, the system notification is sent to the accountable person e.g. mine manager or safety manager. • They view and check any outstanding info that must still be captured.
