  1. Chapter 14

  2. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 14 • There is only one way to heaven! • It is through Jesus, His way & His truth (John 14:4-10). • Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people! Prepared people love & obey! • In His glory, the Son is not subordinate to the Father! • Each equally possesses the same divine nature, character, disposition, intent & love. • To believe in One is to believe in the Other (John 14:1). • To know One is to know the Other; to see One is to see the Other (John 14:7-12). • The works of One are the works of the Other (John 14:10-12).

  3. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 14 • There is a direct correlation and inseparable tie between love and obedience! • Loving Christ & keeping His commandments are combined four times (15, 21, 23, 24). • It is futile, arrogant and disastrous to profess to love Jesus but not obey Him! • Love and obedience cannot be separated (cf. 1 John 2:3-5; John 15:9-16). • Jesus said that one who does not obey Him does not actually love Him (14:24). • If one does not love and obey Christ and His Word: • He does not love and obey the Father’s word (John 14:24). • He will be judged by that which He has rejected (cf. John 12:48; 2 Th. 1:7-9).

  4. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 14 • There is a direct correlation and inseparable tie between love and obedience! • There is only one way to receive the love of Jesus and the love of the Father! • Love Him, treasure His commandments and keep His Word (14:21, 23). • Jesus is our greatest example in this inseparable tie (14:31). • “I love the Father…as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do!” • To demonstrate His love for the Father, He obeyed Him! How can we do less?

  5. An Overview/Theme of John 14:“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled!” • There was much that had happened to trouble them! • “The hour” of His death; Jewish leaders sought to kill Him. • Judas betraying Jesus; Peter going to deny Jesus three times. • There was much that was going to happen to trouble! • Jesus going to be arrested, beaten, abused, shamed and killed. • Jesus was soon going away and they could not follow Him now. • There was much that remained uncertain to them! • The only three people, besides Jesus, to speak in John 14 displayed their confusion. • Thomas (John 14:5); Philip (John 14:8); Judas, not Iscariot (John 14:22).

  6. An Overview/Theme of John 14:“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled!” • John 14 – comfort, reassure and focus the apostles! • True comfort would come thru faith (14:1)! • Jesus spoke about heaven being prepared! • “In My Father’s House are many abiding places” (John 14:2). There is lots of room! • “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). It’s a special & specialized place! • Jesus promised that He was going to return! • The promise: “I will come again” (John 14:3). It is guaranteed! • The reward: “…That where I am, there you may be also” (14:3). With Himforever!

  7. An Overview/Theme of John 14:“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled!” • Jesus made known the way to heaven and made it clear! • “The way you know” (John 14:4). God had made it simple! There was only one way! • To clarify & simplify, He reminded, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (14:6). • He, and He alone, is the way to the Father. There is no other (4:12-13)! • He personifies the truth necessary to know to reach heaven (1:17; 8:32)! • He is the source, preserver & avenue to eternal life (cf. 1 John 5:12)! • “Because I live” (following His death & resurrection), “you will live also” (14:19). • “No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6)! • Through Him, one must believe (14:1, 10-11), love (14:15) and obey (14:21-23)!

  8. An Overview/Theme of John 14:“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled!” • Jesus emphasized close relationship of the Father & Son! • Jesus detailed the closeness of their relationship: • “I am in the Father & the Father in Me” (John 14:10). • Not speak or work independently! • “The words I speak…not Mine but the Father’s…” (John 14:10, 24). • Identical in thought! • “The Father who dwells in Me does the works…” (14:10-11). • Identical in power! • Understanding their close relationship reassures in two ways: • By seeing & knowing Jesus, they had seen & known the Father thru Him (14:7, 9). • When Jesus was gone, they would still see & know Him thru the Father (19-20).

  9. An Overview/Theme of John 14:“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled!” • Jesus promised to send the Comforter to the apostles! • They had one Comforter (Jesus). God would send “another,” same divine nature (16). • Greek (parakletos) lit. means “called to one’s side.” Comforter, Helper, Advocate, etc.

  10. An Overview/Theme of John 14:“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled!” • Jesus promised to send the Comforter to the apostles! • This promise, to the apostles, indicated the Comforter would: • Abide with them for the duration of their work (14:16). • Continue the mission of Christ (John 14:16-18). • Bring, teach and reveal truth, as “the Spirit of truth” (John 14:17). • Be “with” them & “in” them to teach God’s Word (John 14:17). • Ensure not left alone but have the continued presence of the Lord (18). • Come in harmony with the will & authority of Christ (John 14:26). • Teach them “all things” they were unable to receive then (John 14:26). • Remind them of “all things” Jesus had taught them (John 14:26). • They would have all they needed to record the full revelation of God (cf. 2 Pet. 1:21).

  11. An Overview/Theme of John 14:“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled!” • Jesus promised apostles would do greater works than He! • It was necessary that they remain in order to advance His cause on earth (14:12-14). • They would do “greater works”—in number of works, converts & lands reached. • Jesus promised the indwelling of the Godhead! • To those who love the Lord and keep His word: • “We will come to him and make Our home with him” (14:23, 17, 20). • Where there is no obedience, there is no indwelling. • But, where there is true love & obedience, there is an abiding (cf. Gal. 2:20).

  12. An Overview/Theme of John 14:“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled!” • Jesus promised His peace! • His peace is not like the world’s peace; it does not rely on worldly circumstances. • It can soothe the troubled heart and allay doubts and fears within (John 14:27). • It can overcome anxiety and “guard your hearts and minds” (Phil. 4:6-7). • Jesus promised answered prayer, but conditional! • John 14:13-14

  13. How Chapter 14 Helps to Fulfill the Overall Purpose of the Gospel of John • Jesus & the Father equally possess the divine nature (John 14:7-12). • “I Am” Statements: • “I am the way, the truth & the life” (John 14:6) • “…I am in the Father” (John 14:6, 10, 11, 20). • The works Jesus did proved His deity (John 14:10-11). • Prophesied of matters beforehand, that they might believe when fulfilled (John 14:29).
