  6. Math 5 • Introduction I will expect that you keep an organized Math Notebook. Let me show you how to keep a Math Notebook.

  7. Math 5 • Introduction mathematics – the study of numbers, quantities, shapes, and space using mathematical processes and symbols

  8. In this course, I will give you mathematic journal problems to solve in your Math Notebook. To evaluate your problem solving we will use a rubric. A rubric is a scoring guide that tells you what is required for each score.

  9. Math Journal Rubric 4 My work shows that I have a thorough understanding of this math concept. I solved the problem correctly using an efficient strategy. My explanation is very clear. I included the 3 W’s (my work, what I did, and why I chose that operation or strategy). I used mathematical language efficiently.

  10. Math Journal Rubric 3 My work shows that I have a good understanding of this math concept. I solved the problem correctly using an appropriate strategy. My explanation is reasonably clear. I used some mathematical language.

  11. Math Journal Rubric 2 My work shows that I have a some understanding of this math concept. I solved the part of the problem correctly or made some small errors. I used a strategy that was partially useful, but did not lead to a correct solution. My explanation is unclear or incomplete. I used little mathematical language.

  12. Math Journal Rubric 1 My work shows that I need more help to understand this math concept. I gave no answer or an incorrect answer. My strategy was inappropriate. I did not include an explanation. I did not use mathematical language.

  13. Let’s do this one together. Which is a better buy: 5 pencils for $0.20 or 8 pencils for $0.40. Explain your answer.
