  3. Introduction World Health Report states that depression accounts for 40% of all neuropsychiatricdisorders. Depression is a disease characterized by a lack of energy, mood swings, fluctuations in weight, interrupted sleep, waking up very early morning, gain or loss of appetite, etc. Reduction in brain magnesium levels results in lowering ofserotonin. Major depression is terminated with oral and intravenous administration of magnesium. Administration of antidepressant drugs raises the level of magnesiumconcentration.

  4. Role of Magnesium in ourBody Magnesium plays a crucial role in medicalregulating contraction of all kinds of muscles, blood pressure, metabolism of insulin, synthesis of DNA, RNA andproteins. In clinical care, the central nervous system has the maximum concentration of magnesium which accounts for brainbalance. Magnesium acts as a voltage-dependent blocker of N-methyl-D-aspartate channel. This channel is responsible for regulating the flow of calcium to theneuron. In such medicalconditions, calcium and glutamate are take up by the neuron instead magnesium, which in turn leads to deregulation of synaptic function, finally leading to the condition ofdepression.

  5. Ways Magnesium getsDepleted Processed foods lack magnesium and their intake results in magnesiumdeficiency in ourbody. Black beans, pumpkin seeds, cashews, almonds and dark chocolate are some of the food items rich in magnesium. Intake of antacids, diuretics, caffeine and alcohol also decreases magnesium levels. Use of pesticides and potassium-based fertilizers causes magnesiumdepletion. Pesticides kill the important magnesium absorbing bacteria, while potassium of fertilizers is taken up by the plants instead of magnesium andcalcium.

  6. Effects of MagnesiumAdministration The positive side is that mood and cognition gets improved and better with the administration of magnesium such that the normal levels of magnesium gets restored in thebody. People tend to show healthy eating patterns, better quality of sleep, improvementsin efficacy of modalities such as medications, etc. Minerals like magnesium are required in very small amounts in our body but play major roles in several metabolicpathways.
