CIPA • The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) is a federal law passed by Congress in 2000, and updated and clarified since, to help ensure the safety of children accessing the Internet over school and library computers. Any organizations that receive funding through E-Rate or the Universal Service Fund must certify that they are meeting the requirements of CIPA. www.myBigCampus.com

Facts About CIPA and Web Filtering • CIPA requires a web filter for schools that receive E-Rate funding. • CIPA requires that schools block visual depictions that are pornographic, obscene, or harmful to minors. • CIPA requires a policy for educating users, including educating minors about appropriate online behavior and interacting with other individuals on social networking sites; a policy for Internet Safety; and monitoring the activity of minors. • CIPA requires filtering on school-owned devices (even mobile devices); clarification on requirements for student-owned devices used on campuses is forthcoming from the FCC. www.myBigCampus.com

  30. Features on Right Side • Quick Links—(push-pin) marks items for quick reference later. • Click on Number – notifications • Account Info – set up your profile • Notification Preferences -- Change these settings to be more or less informed. (You will want to change these!)

Main Menu (left side) • Activity Feed—overview of what is going on with those you are following and in the groups you are a part of • Post – to ask questions and respond • Hide lets you hide those that are not important. • Heart is a “like” button so you can find it more easily. • Report Abuse—bullying, harassment, foul language, etc. • False reporting is grounds for being removed from MBC. • EduTalk—social network for teachers to discuss educational issues. • Schoolwork—assignments, quizzes, tests, essays, and other types of schoolwork you can assign, much is graded automatically.

Activity…Join SBCSC MBC Training • Join our group: SBCSC MBC Training • Click Groups (left column), then in the orange box, click on the link: Find a Group – Clickbox: Join by Code – enter: arpqxwts – click Join • Notice the various tabs: Home, Announcements, Discussions, Chat, Pages, Resources, Calendar, Members

Activity: Create a Group • Click on Groups in the left-hand column. • Click on the box: Create New Group • In Group Title, give the group a name. • Name Groups carefully. • Eventually, for classes, you may wish to use a Group Name that matches PowerSchool • Choose the School with the drop-down menu. • Write a short Description. • Add a Picture (optional). • Hit Save.

Add Members to a Group Manually(or students can enter a code to join) • Click on the Group icon in the left-hand menu. • Click on the appropriate Group. • Click on the Members tab. • Type Names into the Search Field. • Click on the displayed Name of the person you want to add. • Repeat for other members. • Click Add Users to add all the members listed. -------------------------------------------------------------------- • Notice the options (pull-down menu)provided for each new member. • Admin Rights provides group editing privileges. • Remove User takes the user out of the group.

  36. Overview of Menu Items:Admin Options for Groups • Click on the Admin Options drop-down menu. • Choose Edit to set group preferences and to create a Group Home Page. Scroll down to see other choices including removing announcements, discussions, etc. • Maintenance allows you to remove all members. • Import/Export things from the group, as needed. • Clone a group to make an exact copy. • Merge to allows you to merge parts of groups into other groups. • Archive allows you to Save a group but remove it from information searches and hide it from members. Reopen by clicking on Archive.

Creating a Group Home Page • Click on the Admin Options drop-down menu and pull down to Edit. • Edit the Group Info, which includes • Title • Short Course Description • Students may join your group with an Auto-Approve Code. • Click the Add Code button, and write down the code! If you don’t like the displayed code, click again until you see one that you like. • Students or Teachers will click on the Request to Join button and type in the Access Code(as we did earlier). • The next Field is a text editor called Home Page Content. • It should contain basic information about the Class. • Add Contact information for you. • It will also hold a Link, Picture, or Video Clip, if you wish.

Activity: Adding a picture, link, & movie to your group’s home page • Add a picture by just clicking in the home page where you want it and drag the picture to the home page editor window • Add a link by typing a name– such as: Self Paced Tutorial, then highlight words Self Paced Tutorial and while highlighted click on the chain (link) symbol, then type URL, click Target tab, click New Window, Click OK, Click Save GOOD IDEA to link documents that you have on your Edline site. • Add a movie by clicking on the home page where you want to insert it, then click on the film icon or right arrow icon to import a movie from your drive or the MBC Library, then search for the movie, click on the link of the movie, and adjust the frame by double clicking on the frame, select alignment, click OK – Save (at bottom) then video will appear on home page.

Other Choices (in Edit mode) • Decide whether this group will be Private. • Determine who will be able to add Pages and Create Resources from within the group. • Enable Pages provides the ability to limit student access. • Remove Chat permanently or temporarily. • Allow only Pages and Resources for project groups. • Make only Announcements, Resources, and Calendar available so students will only check for assignments. • Use only the Discussion board, and nothing else. • Finally, add a symbol, picture, or graphic to make your Group unique. • Click Save or Cancel to get out of the Edit mode

Other Group Sections • Announcements—post information here to make sure everyone in the group sees it in the Activity feed. • Discussion—public to the whole group • Chat—allows conversations within the group with any member logged in to the chat • Pages—store files/documents within files/documents; text editor • Resources—store videos, documents, and other resources • Calendar—use it as the student planner. • Enter due dates for the group. • Each group will be a different color. • Students will have ALL their due dates in one place! • Members—lists all members of the group with options to remove or lock down each. • Blog—teacher use

Using Library Resources • To find a Video, Website, Bundle, Document, or Schoolwork already in MBC, click on Library (left column) and enter a topic in the white search box. • Choose a Website and click on it to open it. • Notice options to add to drive or add to bundle or visit website • Find a Video and Click on it. • To watch the video, double-click on the video itself. • Pick a Bundle and Click on it to open it. • Open a Document by clicking on it. • Click the blue Download button to go to the original location. • Save As to put the document on your desktop. • Upload it to your Drive to save it for your own use. • Click on a piece of Schoolwork to open it. You may then use the blue Duplicate button to put a copy into your schoolwork file.

  42. Adding Library Resources (YouTube Video & New Website) • To add a YouTube or other video, open the video and copy the URL. • Click on Library in the main left-hand menu. • Click on the blue Add a Library Item button and pull down to Add a New YouTube Video. • Paste the URL into the Address box, be sure that http:// is at the beginning and click on Get Info. • If the video is not already in MBC, you must fill-out all the information, including Tags, Subject, etc. • Click Add – the YouTube Video should appear. • You can always filter (in the library) to Added by You to view just the videos that you entered. • To add a Website, in the Library click on the blue Add a Library Item button and pull down to Add New Website and follow the prompts.

  43. Adding Files to Your Drive • Files would be things you have created and saved on your own computer. Uploading them to MBC is easy! • To add Files to Drive, click on Drive, go to the New button (blue), and pull down to File. • Click on the link, Click Here to Upload Files, find your file, and click on it. You can also Drag and Drop. ------------------------------------------------------- • NOTE: The File is in Drive, but NOT in the MBC Library. • IMPORTANT: Any File you want students to access has to be in a file format that the students have available such as a .pdf

Organize MBC Drive • Drive contains folders to better organize your stuff. • Searching the Drive is NOT the same as searching the Library. • Add new items to your Drive by clicking on the New button (blue) and pulling down to the item you wish to add. • Upload File and Folder can include anything you wish and any label that fits your needs. • Filter by Label is a valuable tool for finding items (across all file types) in a specific category. • Labels are created by the user. (Add new label and apply label to the files. Then you can search by that label.)

Introduction to Bundles • Bundles are the main tool to deliver instruction in MBC. • A Bundle is as big or little as you make it and can serve many purposes • resource collection • schoolwork collection • resources with built-in lessons and schoolwork. • Many Bundles already exist in MBC, and you are free to use any that you find. • If you want to Change a Bundle that already exists, you must Branch it. This makes it yours! Change it in any way you see fit!

Activities... • Search the MBC Library and Bundles, and find some existing resources that pertain to your topic and that you could use in your classroom. • Put them in Your Drive, or Quick Link them. • Think about the Home Page for the class you made today. • Try to have a Group picture or symbolto put on your home page. • Determine what you want your Home Page to look like.

  48. Bundles—Branch Them • A Bundle is the main instructional feature in MBC. • Bundles can be Branched from someone else and changed, Embedded as is with no changes, or Built from scratch. • If you want to Change a Bundle that already exists in MBC, you must Branch it. • This makes it yours! • Change it an any way you see fit! • Click on Branch. • Click on the Edit link at the top. • Change the Topic Information to fit your new Bundle. • Change the Content as you see necessary, including text, files, and Bundle Locks. • Save andShare, or Publish!

  49. Build a Bundle • To Create a bundle: • Click on Create--orange button in top menu bar. • Click on Bundle. • Click on each Tab and Fill-out all the information requested. Save your bundle after each tag!!! • Adding Tags and completing the Objective and Summary helps locate more easily later. • Contentis where the Bundle is built. Select Type of Content is where you get the items to put in your Bundle. • Insert Text • Upload Files • Add Bundle Locks • Standards allows you to choose the standards that apply. • Cover Art is required!—you click on it to open the bundle. • Collaborators—anyone that is helping you build or maintain this bundle. • Save versus Publish • Save just saves the changes/additions you made. • Publish is to put the bundle on MBC. If you don’t Publish your bundle, you have to assign it to people to use.

  50. Bundle Locks • Bundle locks are devices that allow you to “pace” how quickly a student travels through a Bundle. • Open the bundle you wish to change. • Click the Edit link under the creation date. • Click on Content. • Go to the drop-down menu, Select Type of Content. • Pull down to Bundle Locks and choose it. • Three types of Bundle Locks– drag the appropriate lock to the spot in the content where you wish it to be. • Time—locks the Bundle for a specific amount of time. • User—locks the Bundle until the user open the lock. • Schoolwork—locks the Bundle until the Schoolwork has been completed, even with a threshold. (Make Schoolwork first!) • To delete the lock in the list of Content, just click on the lock and click the red X – then click OK
