  1. Essays Background There are 4 types of essays in the world. Some essays inform or explain. Some essays give opinions or persuade.

  2. Inform/Explain Ex: All About Martin Luther King Informational Essay: This is the “old school” report of information Explanatory Essay: Personal Essay (I feel/I believe) Ex: Martin Luther King is my hero because…

  3. Opinion/Persuade Ex: Martin Luther King is the most influential civil rights activist. Expository Essay: Opinion (state your beliefs and prove it. Persuasive Essay: State your belief, prove it, and get the reader to do something. Ex: Visit the Martin Luther King Memorial this summer.

  4. Which type of essay is a research paper? Informational (All About…) Explanatory (I feel/ I believe) Expository (State your belief and prove it) Persuasive (State your belief, prove it, and get the reader to do something)

  6. Detective Work Directions: Working in small groups, complete the following: Read through the sample packets. Jot down what you notice all the texts seem to have in common
