  1. Internet Basics

  2. It’s all going mobile • All of what we have discussed can be achieved via mobile phones! • This is also know as Convergence

  3. The Internet = a collection of computers all over the world connected to exchange information

  4. How do you know you are connected? Desktop Mobile

  5. Surfing / Browsing “Surfing” is when you look at or “browse” websites.

  6. To use the Internet • First – you will need to be connected. • Second – you will need a browser. • You will find one of the following icons on your computer. • Software that connects to the Internet are called browsers. • Double click on it.

  7. Browsers

  8. Less common browsers

  9. Address Bar • Browsers have an address bar that shows the web address (also called a URL) of the page you are on. To go to a different page, you can type an address in the address bar and then press Enter (or Return).

  10. Links • Most of the time, you will get to a different page by clicking on a link. A link can be text or an image, and it's usually formatted to stand out so you know to click on it. Many text links are blue, and they may also be underlined. • For example, this is a link. It will open a web page in a new window, and you can close it to come back to this page.

  11. A link may lead to another web page, or it could lead to a document, video, or any other type of file. If you're not sure if something's a link, hover the mouse over it. The pointer should change to a hand symbol.

  12. Navigation Buttons • Sometimes, after you click on a link, you might want to go back to the previous page. You can do this using your browser's Back button. Once you've pressed the Back button, you can press the Forward button to follow the link again.

  13. Refresh and Stop • If a page is taking too long to load, or if you've typed in the wrong URL, you use the Stop button to stop the page from loading.

  14. Important • There are some instances where you don't want to use the navigation buttons. For example, in some online stores, you shouldn't refresh the page after purchasing an item, as it could cause you to purchase the item twice.

  15. Search Bar • Most browsers have a built-in search bar for performing web searches.

  16. Tabbed Browsing • Many browsers allow you to open a link in a new tab.  This allows you to keep the current page open instead of going directly to the new page.

  17. To Open A New Tab • To open a link in a new tab, right-click the link and click Open in New Tab (the wording may vary from browser to browser). To close a tab, click the "X" on the tab.

  18. Performing A Search • There are numerous search engines out there, but the most popular ones are Google, Yahoo, and Bing. • If your browser has a search bar you can use that for convenience. • Or we can go direct to www.google.ie

  19. How to Search • Let’s search for recipes • When you type into a browser’s search bar, it might give you suggestions. • These are great because they’ll give you suggestions you might not have though about. • You can click on any of the suggestions or you can just keep typing. • Or using the address bar go to www.google.ie

  20. Let’s get results for “recipes cookies”

  21. Advertisements

  22. To make search more specific • We may want to make the search more specific. • So let’s get rid of all results that contain the word chocolate. This will get rid of any recipes with chocolate. • We’ll now type recipes cookies –chocolate • Note there is no space between the minus symbol and chocolate

  23. Search for specific phrase • But your words in quotes. • If we want to search for specifically sugar cookies, not just cookie recipes with sugar in them, then we put “sugar cookies” in quotes.

  24. Image Search • Switch to Image search

  25. Video Search • Switch to Video

  26. Map Search • http://maps.google.com
