  2. About Suicide Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one’s own death. It is often committed out of a perceived overload of negative feelings like despair. Pressure or misfortune such as relationship issues or financial difficulties usually plays a significant role. It could also be a result of an untreated mental disorder such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

  3. About Depression Major depressive disorder (MDD, also known as clinical depression) is a mental disorder characterized by a constant or mostly low mood, which is accompanied by low self-esteem and by loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities.

Some Phrases That Hint at Suicidal Intention • “Life isn’t worth living.” • “Don’t worry; I won’t be around to deal with that.” • “You’d be better off without me.” • “I won’t be in your way much longer.” • “I just can’t deal with everything; life’s too hard.” • “You’ll be sorry when I’m dead.” • “Nobody understands me; nobody feels the way I do.” • “I feel like there is no way out.”

Some Examples of What Not to Say to a Depressed Person • “You just need to give yourself a kick in the rear.” • “But it’s all in your mind.” • “I thought you were stronger than that.” • “No one ever said that life was fair.” • “Do you feel better now?” • “There are a lot of people worse off than you.” • “You have no reason to feel this way.” • “Happiness is a choice.” • “You are what you think.” • “The only one you’re hurting is yourself.” • “You can do anything you want if you just set your mind to it.”

Myths Regarding Suicide • People who talk about suicide won’t really do it. • Anyone who tries to kill himself/herself must be crazy. • If a person is determined to kill himself/herself, nothing is going to stop him/her. • People who commit suicide are people who were unwilling to seek help. • Talking about suicide may give someone the idea.

Symptoms of Depression • Unrelenting low mood • Sad, Anxious, or “Empty” feelings • Irritability, Restlessness • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed • Anxiety, Psychic Pain, and Inner Tension • Impaired Concentration, Memory of Details, and Decisiveness • Withdrawal from family and/or friends • Fatigue • Changes in Appetite, Sleep Patterns, and/or Weight

What Not to Do When Talking to a Suicidal/Depressed Person • Argue with the person • Act shocked • Lecture on the value of life • Say that suicide is wrong • Promise to be sworn to secrecy • Give advice • Make the person feel like (s)he has to justify his/her feelings • Trivialize or Minimize the situation • Drop a platitude on the person

Warning Signs of Suicidal Intentions • Observable signs of depression • Sudden swing from sadness to apparent calmness or happiness • Neglect of personal welfare or appearance • Speaking as if (s)he is going away • Increased use of alcohol and/or drugs • Recent impulsiveness • Giving away prized possessions
