  2. What was Assessed? Students will be able to: • SLO #1: Utilize tools of inquiry and structures of the discipline(s) to make interdisciplinary connections. (Content Knowledge) • SLO #2: Analyze how children learn and develop, and design learning opportunities that support children’s intellectual, social, personal and physical development. (Child Development) • SLO #3: Apply knowledge of diverse cultures to create instructional opportunities that are inclusive of diverse learners. (Diversity) • SLO #4: Develop a variety of instructional strategies to encourage development of critical thinking, problem solving, performance skills, social interaction, and active engagement. (Instruction)

What was Assessed? • SLO #5: Use effective verbal, nonverbal and/or media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, expression, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. (Communication) • SLO #6: Plan instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, children and curriculum goals. (Planning Integrated Instruction) • SLO #7: Employ formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of young learners. (Assessment) • SLO #8: Use reflective practice by evaluating the effects of his/her choices and actions on others, and actively seek out opportunities to grow professionally.   4. How was the assessment accomplished?Courses Conducting Assessments IAC 280 Seminar in Interdisciplinary Arts for Children IAC 491 Advanced Studies in Interdisciplinary Arts for Children

  5. IAC 280 Tools of Inquiry: Arts Integrated Unit of InstructionAddressing PreK– 6th Grade NYS and Core Curriculum Standards. Analysis of Instructional Methods: Lesson design incorporates skills-based, arts-integrated activities relating to content knowledge and skills being taught.

  6. Analysis of Assessment Methods : 80% of students will score at least 41/56 on analytic rubric (73%)

  7. Sample Size: Total number of students assessed in IAC 280: 33 students total 17 in Fall 2012, 16 in Fall 2013 • Percent exceeding: 5/33 = 15% • Percent meeting: 8/33 = 24% • Percent approaching: 8/33 = 24% • Percent not meeting: 12/33 = 37%

  8. The benchmarks established for IAC 280 were not met. • Two non-majors did not hand in final lesson plan. Three non-majors performed poorly on final lesson plan. None performed well on written assignments. • Even without non-majors, the established benchmark would not have been met.

  9. Closing the Loop • Future instructors for IAC 280 will only offer this course to majors who have taken the four pre-requisites. • Increased office and “by appointment” hours to assist students during the process • A “draft” lesson plan review to catch errors and redirect when necessary • Development/publishing of multiple resources to assist students with assignment

  10. Results: Between Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 the preceding changes were made. The result was a significant increase in students meeting the benchmark from Fall 2012 (9/17 or 53%) to Spring 2013 (12/16 or 75%). No resources requested.

  11. Tools of InquiryIAC 491 Focus of analysis: A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers will Rule the Future by Daniel Pink Analysis of instructional methods: A written analysis of Pink’s text included applications to IAC major and profession as well as personal goals.

  12. Analysis of Assessment Methods: 80% of students will score at least 75% based on content and writing mechanics guidelines.

  13. Sample Size: Total number of students assessed in IAC 491: 33 Spring Semester 2013 • Percent exceeding: 16/33 = 48% • Percent meeting: 14/33 = 42% • Percent approaching: 3/33 = 10% • Percent not meeting: 0/33 = 0%

  14. The benchmarks established for IAC 491 were met. • No resources required or requested to close the loop.
