  2. Lexis-Nexis: Source for legal, company, and business news information • Follow the same steps as for other business databases using the LexisNexis link and your name and 14-digit library access #. • News searching, legal searching , people and company searching is available.

  3. Lexis-Nexis: Source for legal, company, and business news information, and a lot more! • Searching by news source or sources in a geographical area • Let’s look first at the different screens and how each might be used; then we will look at some possible search scenarios:

  4. There is a lot on the Easy Search start page, but each “area” has its own functionality, depending on what you need to find.

  5. Let’s start by looking at each search box… Search the News • Search the News • News from 1980 to present. • Search by keyword or topic. • Use the dropdown beside Source Type to select. • Or, search by actual title.

  6. Let’s start by looking at each search box… Search the News Note the default sort is by relevance. You can resort by publication date or chronology.

  7. Look up a Legal Case • Search any legal case from state courts and higher. • Search by citation #; Parties; or topic. • Landmark Cases pulls out important cases from our national history.

  11. Get Company Info • Get in depth company information, including Hoover’s In-depth Reports.

  12. The Business option allows searching for company dossiers, comparing companies, SEC Filings, etc.

  13. The Company tab allows for some comparison options with other companies.

  14. Using the Compare Companies option allows you to compare as many as four other companies to the first one you list. Green Mountain and Diedrich will be compared to Starbucks.

  15. Scroll down the page for more information such as Liabilities, Income Statement, and Ratio Analysis, etc.

  16. From the tabs, click on: Company >> Create a Company List. You may want to create a list to search. For example all companies of a certain NAICS code in your state. As the next screen shows, you can search by geographical areas, financial information, area codes, NAICS or SIC codes etc.

  17. Enter any of the criteria that you care to search. This search will find all Biological Product Manufacturing companies, but not diagnostic supplies in Marion County, Indiana.

  18. First, you get a list of all matching companies. Then you can Customize List.

  19. You choose the criteria you want to compare on the companies and how they are sorted.

  20. This list is sorted by number of employees and can be downloaded.

  21. Research Countries • Use the dropdown under Country to select your country. • Then select a Source. • Click: Go

  22. Research People • The People search allows searching through many • kinds of biographical sources and recent news stories on a famous person.

  23. Now let’s look at some search scenarios… • Can I search specific news sources like National Public Radio (NPR)? • Click on: Sources (Start up page >> • Click on: Find Sources >> • Type in the needed source >>

  27. Are there any law reviews about unlawful detainment of enemy aliens at Guantanamo Bay? • Use the Combined Search (last search box) • Type topic. • Choose year range. • Check mark Law Reviews. • There were 4 reviews.

  30. I need information on a private company, Cargill. • LexisNexis is the best database for finding private company information. Use the Get Company Info box.

  31. What is the easiest way to get information about Roe v. Wade? • Use the Look up a Legal Case. • Click on: Landmark Cases. • Look for the case. They are divided by topic area.

  32. Printing, emailing, downloading documents: • Any document may be saved by various methods.

Lexis-Nexis in review: • An excellent resource for all kinds of business news, legal, and company research • Full text information available • Excellent for researching legal information • The best source for researching privately owned companies • Not a good source for peer-reviewed articles. Very limited in Lexis-Nexis. • This information is just a click away!
