  2. BUS 170 ORIENTATIONAug 22, 2012 • Welcome – My background; why I teach • Orientation – practical vs. theoretical students vs. bodies • Enrollment: Class size will be 47 students; will take roll later • No shows will be dropped • Class is full, no adds today

To Add This Class (if space) • If you are a senior graduating (Dec, 2012 only), bring proof of eligibility • Go to BSAC to get the Add Verification form that confirms your graduation date • All applicants, including graduating seniors: Provide JC and SJSU transcripts (unofficial) Provide class schedule for the Fall 2012 • Must receive by Monday, Aug 27th, BT 460. Will let you know Wednesday, Aug 29th.

TIPS • Open Sections Bus 170: None • There is no more on-line registration; you must have an add code • Add codes are only good for 48 hours, so if you get one, add immediately! • There is no more waiting list either • Bus 170 offered in Winter, as well as next spring • If you are upset by this, go to Dean’s office, BT 950, and express your concerns to the Assoc Dean, Malu Roldan.

COURSE DESCRIPTION • Focus is on Corporate and personal financial decision making • Provide students with a conceptual understanding of the financial decision making process. • Provide a framework upon which most financial decisions are based (10 Axioms) • Provide qualitative and quantitative (ratios) decision making tools and techniques

  7. Learning Outcomes • Financial Statement analysis/implications • Time value of money impact on investments • Capital budgeting using NPV & IRR • Impact of Risk on return considerations • Firm Valuation methodologies • Cash Management techniques • Impact of above on personal finances

  8. COURSE DESCRIPTION OBJECTIVES • Creation of wealth for the firm by making sound business decisions • Personalize concepts for your individual use • Maximization of stakeholder wealth • Define “stakeholders” vs “Stockholders”

  9. Stakeholders • Non-stakeholders - management • Stakeholders (everyone else): • Stockholders (owners) • Creditors (receivables) • Employees • Suppliers • Customers • Community • Lenders (payables) • Government • Planet/Environment

You will do well in this class if you: • Prefer practical application to theory • Want good education (students) vs. just a good grade (bodies) • Enjoy participating in class discussion • Want to practice ethical behavior • Learn professional business behavior • Want to improve written and oral skills • Interested in the greater business context

  11. You will do poorly if you: • Like to miss class • Are frequently late to class • Cheat on exams or plagiarize papers (you will fail!) • Don’t like doing homework • Are only here to get a passing grade & do as little as possible to get through; please take someone else’s class

  12. Professional Behavior • No food in class (water ok) • Turn off cell phones! No texting. • Leave class room neat and clean • Arrive on time/don’t leave early • Attend class regularly • Call or email me in advance if you need to do any of the above (professional courtesy) • Do not play or surf on computer – this will result in disciplinary action!

COURSE STRATEGY – how to get an A (good grade) • Attend/Participate in class • Read chapter before lecture • Do homework right after class • Get financial calculator (TI BA II Plus) • Ask questions • Study at least 3 – 5 hours per week • Use power points as study guide • Use my office hours, Mon 9:30 to 11:00, and Wed 11:00 to 12:30
