  6. Cretaceous PeriodHistory The Cretaceous period was the last time that dinosaurs were alive. They went extinct, but before that they lived in the Cretaceous Period from 144-65 million years age. Here is what the time period was like with these creatures. The Cretaceous period was the last part of the Mesozoic period and the longest. It was broken down into three segments: early, middle, and late cretaceous. Pangaea was continuing to separate and become individual continents. Weather during the beginning half was warm, but that all changed during the later half. When it was warm we see sea levels high with no ice on the poles and when the weather changed levels went down and volcanoes started to act up and 75% of the species disappeared. In this period we start seeing our first glimpse of flowering plants . Flowering plants were named angiosperms or anthophyta. The angiosperms enjoyed damper climate for thriving in. They were discovered around 125 million years ago. We also saw shrubs and ferns too. Mountains started to form. Sierra Navadas and Rocky Mountains were two that formed. The reason for the extinction was a meter hit the earth and wiped out the dinosaurs and lots of other things out.
