  17. 14May08: • Target team (P.Smith, P.Hodgson, C.MacWaters): • Re-commissioned target drive • Commissioned programmable delay unit • Issue: • ISIS will serve TS1 and TS2 after next 10-day run • Implies: • 20% of machine cycles will be sent to TS2 • Pattern: 4 pulses to TS1 – 1 pulse to TS2 • Implicaiton for MICE: • Need to re-commissioning timing • Target ready (including stepper motor) • Electrical authorising officer system introduced: • MOMs to be trained to be ‘authorised persons’ by M. Glover • Electrical Authorisation to Work to be issued by Hall Manager or MOM • Includes operation of magnet power supplies • Successfully put in place and executed • D1 and D2 powered for parasitic running test • Parasitic running test aborted because of ISIS RF problems

  18. 15May08: parasitic running • ISIS set up to deliver protons to TS1: • Neutron user run • Dean Adams ISIS physicist on shift • 480 MeV/c positive particles: • D1 400 A, D2 170 A • DAQ running: JSG and VV • Set target dip-depth and actuation delay to deliver beam loss close to extraction D. Adams, M. Apollonio, A. Dobbs, P. Hodgson, C. MacWaters, J. Leaver, K. Long, H. Sakamoto, P. Smith, K. Tilley, J.S. Grauhlich, V. Verguilov, K. Walaron, D. Wright

  19. Parasitic running demonstrated • Stable running for > 3 hrs • As delay increases, rate approaches background • ISIS trip due to beam loss at injection when delay set to 3 ms • reproducible

  20. MOM: M.Apollonio 16May08: target: scan dip and delay • MICE shift in Machine Physics period: • Goals: • Commission Q1 – Q3 • Not possible, too little time! • Scan target dip depth and actuation delay: • D1 400 A, D2 170 A • Successfully measured particle rates in GVA1 and GVA2 and beam loss over a grid of dip and delay values • Details at CM21!

  21. 19May08: quad commissioning • Commission Q1 – Q3 and Q4 – Q6 • Apollonio, Dobbs, Hughes, Long, Sakamoto, Tilley Trip due to magnet-water flow: corrected, test continued

  22. 19May08: MCLR – the way nature intended?

  23. 20May08 Booth, Charnley, McCarron, Mullacrane • Target: • Frame was lowered by between 8 and 9 mm; • Measurement of voltage excursion on target actuation attempted: • No noticeable spike, inconclusive because measurement was at power-electronics rack • Re-measure with target in Sheffield and again in R76 (); • LN2 bottle in vault replaced; • Permanent LN2 pipe route planned; • To be agreed with ISIS (Thomason) and implemented by Spensley; • Solenoid: • Polarity check performed -- wiring certified OK; • Downstream beam line: • Work began on changing D2 from the temporary water supply to the permanent supply • Tracker: • Discriminator threshold measurement performed on trigger counters for tracker test in R8. Long, Spensley Courthold, Hills, Tilley Govans, Spensley, Brian Sakamoto, MacWaters

  24. Photos and data fromE.McCarron Lowering of target: • Target mechanism lowered by addition of shims: • Gain in depth 8 ± 0.5 mm • Water pipes ‘tidied’ to remove risk of snagging on edge of target support frame • Colder water solution found: • Chiller in ‘catacombs’, will be installed in August shutdown with new target

  25. 20May08: tracker trigger counter setup Sakamoto, MacWaters • Rate vs HV and threshold: Underinvestigation Low statistics?

  26. 21May08 Eamon, Mike • Downstream beam line: • Parts for D2 water supply produced • Will fit 22May08 • Implies string test could take place 23May08 evening • Preparation for installation of temporary removable beam stop: Spensley, Brian

  27. 21May08 Walaron,MacWaters,Hare • Preparations for tracker mock-up in Hall: • Goal: to confirm cable runs, cable lengths, positioning of compressors and flexible high-pressure hoses, etc.

  28. Magnet commissioning status: Magnet PS cooling Magnet cooling PS current Polarity check Soak test Remote control commissioned  Q1 Q2 • To do: • Remote control of Q1 – Q3 • String test: • Run all conventional magnets together • Possible: Friday, 23May08 evening • Fall back: Bank Holiday Monday, 26May08 completed Q3 D1  not completed D2  to be done Q4  Q5  Q6  Q7  Q8  Q9  superconducting solenoid Polarity check OK

  29. Shifts in machine run-up: • Assumption: • Having demonstrated parasitic running, we should use Machine Physics shifts to: • Re-define (increase) beam-loss limit; • Perform studies that require access • Note: ‘routine optics’ measurements should be done during the user run • Goals: • Measure particle rates with Q1 – Q3 and try to increase flux by increasing target dip • Frame has been lowered by 8 – 9 mm • Ensure BM1&2 and BC2 are working • Implies testing with source during shutdown • Radiation survey in MICE Hall: • Conditions agreed in discussion with P.Wright • Worry: • Will ToF0/1 be available?

  30. Layout: preparation for step I GVA1, BM1 GVA2, BM2 ‘GVA3’BC2 CKovA,B

  31. Preparations for next period: • Seeking material for ‘GVA3’ • Could be built if scintillator could be found using a ‘second hand’ PMT • Have BC1 • But this has 2 dead channels • Consider stand that could be erected between shield wall and Q7 to support TOF0

  32. Shifts in machine run-up: • Shift 1: • Establish new operating point: • Particle rate vs beam loss with magnets on • BM&BC tests • Proton absorber • Shift 2: • Radiation surveys: • Magnets OFF, ISIS 50 pps, target dipping • Magnets ON, ISIS 50 pps, target dipping • Mis-steered ISIS beam, Q1-3, D1, decay solenoid on, D2 and Q4-6 off, the goal to measure shine on the north shielding wall • Array of for mounting on north wall required • In preparation (Jamdagni, Hare) • Shift 3 (if possible): • Initial optics studies • Of course, now that parasitic running has been established, optics studies can take place during user run

  33. Outstanding issues: • Beam line: • Target: • Documentation: • In preparation: P.Hodgson • Conventional magnets: • String test and remote control of Q1 – Q3 • Instrumentation: • Commission and test BM1, BM2, & BC2 with source • ‘GVA3’ • Detectors for Step I: • ToF: • ‘Fall-back’ stand for positioning ToF0 outside shielding • ToF/KL: • Cable installation • DAQ: • Documentation: • In preparation? Jean-Sebestien Graulich • G4MICE: • Reconstruction of last week’s data … would be interesting …
