  2. ATTRACTIONS - HISTORY History of Malaysia KUALA LUMPUR 1 2 DataranMerdeka or Merdeka Square is a good starting point to explore the city’s heritage sites. The Union Jack was lowered here on 31 August 1957 marking Malaysia’s independence from colonial rule. Hence the name Merdeka, which means “Independence” in Malay. A 100-metre-high flagpole, reputedly the tallest in the world, proudly flies the Malaysian flag. Sultan Abdul Samad Building. This remarkable edifice, built in 1897, was named after the State Ruler and served as the government administration building during the British era. Boasting a Mahometan or Neo-Saracenic style, the building is constructed entirely of brick. It was the largest building of its day and was said to be the finest in the Malay states. The stately structure consists of an imposing porch, graceful horseshoe-shaped arches, shiny copper domes and a 41.2-metre-high clock tower. The building makes an impressive landmark when illuminated at night. KL Railway Station. This splendid building in the heart of the city was the hub for the nation’s rail transportation system before the modern KL Sentral Station was built. Its Moorish architecture with graceful arches and minarets makes it one of the city’s most photographed landmarks. Equally impressive is the Malayan Railway (KTM) Headquarters overlooking the railway station. 3 POWERPOINT by Tourism Malaysia . www.tourism.gov.my

This famous Malay warrior served as the admiral of Melaka’s naval forces and successfully defended countless attack against Melaka. The outstanding military exploits of Hang Tuah and his four comrades, made him a legend in history. St. Paul's Hill (A'Famosa) The Portuguese colonised Melaka from 1511 to 1641. The first thing they did was build a fort overlooking the river, calling it A'Famosa. As Melaka was the centre of struggles between super powers of the time, and suffered the constant threat of attack, the A'Famosafort was critical for the Portuguese maintaining its colonial foothold in the Far East. StadthuysAnother major landmark in the state, the Stadthuys was built in 1600 as the official residence of Dutch governors and their officers. The building, originally white, iwasgiven a striking salmon-red colour to match the nearby Christ Church. 1 2 3 POWERPOINT by Tourism Malaysia . www.tourism.gov.my
