  1. CLASSROOM PROCEDURES Ms. Henderson’s 5thGrade Reading Class

  2. Hello children… • So excited you are here! With that in mind…. • I am here to teach; you are here to learn. I will do my job; you will do yours, and we will together use this year wisely and beneficially. • Positive attitude is the key of success. Let’s keep it all the time.

  3. WHY DO WE HAVE PROCEDURES? • A procedure is the way that we do things. • To do things right, we have to follow some simple procedures, for example: • To open your locker, you have to select your combination as directed by the lock manufacturer. • To place a call on your phone, you need to enter the number in the right order. • So, to be successful in learning, you need to follow some simple procedures.

  4. ENTRANCE • Make sure you have all necessary materials for the class-including sharpened pencils. • Enter the classroom quietly. • Go directly to your assigned seat. • Get ready for your work.

  5. RIGHT AFTER THE BELL RINGS □ Record class work and homework in your planner. Remember you may have to add unfinished class work to the homework section of your planner. □ Start and complete your “Do Now” that will be written on the board or available on the overhead. □ When you finish, wait quietly for the next direction.

  6. The PASS • You will receive a Pass each six weeks. • You may use this Pass to go to the restroom, get a drink, Homework Pass, etc. • If you use the Pass for Homework, you may use it only once per subject each six weeks. • It may NOT be used for free dress. • Any unused Pass opportunities will be placed in a prize raffle at the end of each six weeks.

  7. Behavioral Expectations • Students will be expected to actively participate, be prepared for class, ask relevant questions, and expect to get something out of every class day. • Students will be held accountable for their decisions, with both positive rewards and strict consequences applied per the Students Handbook.

  8. DURING INSTRUCTION • Listen to the teacher with full attention. • No pencil sharpening, talking, or whispering. • Ask permission to speak by raising your hand. • Ask questions related to the subject. Other questions which are not related to the subject can be asked after instruction. • After instruction, make sure you understand the concept. If not, ask questions by mentioning which part you didn’t understand.

  9. WHILE YOU ARE WORKING • Make sure you read or listen to the directions about your work and understand them. • If you didn’t understand, ask help from other students sitting around you. “Three before me" If they also don’t understand, ask to the teacher to explain it. • If you are asked to help, be polite and kind and offer your best. • Talking to each other should be at a low volume level. • Respect each other and be friendly. • Use your time wisely. Put forth your best effort to finish your work on time.

  10. IF THE TEACHER ASKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION • Stop whatever you are doing at that moment. • Face the teacher and wait silently (No talking or moving). • Notify any classmates who haven’t noticed that the teacher has asked for your attention. • No talking or whispering. All of your attention should be given to the teacher.

  11. Pencils • Sharpening pencils during class time can be very distracting and frustrating for other students in the class. • Please try to sharpen your pencils before class begins. • Should you have to sharpen your pencil, you must wait until all instruction has been given and you have been assigned your independent assignments. • Do not sharpen colored pencils and crayons in the electric sharpener.

  12. Reading Spiral • You should have a 3-subject Spiral Notebook for our Reading class and our Reading class only. • Use pen or pencil to write in your journal. sometimes we may take notes in other colors, but you will be told when it is acceptable to use other colors. • The first page should be the title page. Write your full name, class and period on it. We will set up journals later this week. • Keep your journal clean and organized. • Your journal will be collected and checked from time to time. Turn it in on time when you are asked. • Take good care of your journal. Do not lose it.

  13. AFTER YOU ARE DONE • Check your work and the directions one more time to see if you missed anything or did something incorrectly. • If the assignment is to be turned in, do so. • Read your book, magazine, etc. or finish up homework from another class.

  14. DISMISSAL • Clean your work area and take all garbage to the trash can. • Wait for the teacher to dismiss you. The ring of the bell does not dismiss you. • After you get permission to leave, push in your chair and leave quietly. • If it is the last period of the day, place the chairs on the desks or stack chairs against the wall. Thank You.

  15. HOMEWORK PROCEDURE • Homework that is assigned is due the next day unless I give you an alternative due date. • Please see Student Handbook for the late homework policy.

  16. WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT • Get the assignments from the make up/absent bucket near the whiteboard. You may also ask to borrow my planner to copy down the assignments that were missed for whatever day you were out. This is to be done after instruction has been given for the day. Do the work at home, unless there is time throughout the day for you to work on it. • If you missed a test because of your excused absence, please inform the teacher and arrangements will be made in order for you to make up the test as soon as possible.

  17. WHEN YOU ARE TARDY • You will not be excused from any work you missed. Get the assignment from the extra paper folders near the whiteboard or from a classmate.

  18. Transitions/Hallway • When changing classes • Go directly to your next class • Do not play in the halls or go outside. • Walk on the right side of the hallway. • Talking is allowed but only at a inside and soft voice. • No yelling or loud talking. • You may and are encouraged to take a restroom break during these class changes. • Use the restrooms near the green hallway. • Do not play in the restrooms. • Leave all younger children alone. • No yelling or loud talking.

  19. Lunch • Lunch is at 11:40 (after 4th Period). • Before going to the cafeteria, take your backpack to your seat in 5th Period. • Seat in your assigned place. • Please talk at a soft, inside voice. No yelling. • Do not get out of your seat to throw away trash until instructed to do so at the end of lunch. • If you need to get up for another reason, please raise your hand for permission. • Wait to be dismissed and then line up as instructed to walk outside for recess.
