  1. Day 2Planning to achieve CCSS Implementation Goals Session1 Using a Structured Planning & Problem-Solving Process to Support CCSS Implementation

  2. Agenda • Preparing for Change • Session 1 Activity • District team analysis of Day 1 Priorities • Principal PLC “wish list” for CCSS Awareness & Understanding • Prepare for Day 2 4:45 PM Team-based Planning Activity.

  3. Preparing for Change

  4. Systems Change Implementation (E.g., Established procedures, Supportive policies, continuous improvement) Infrastructure (Eg., Schedule, Personnel, Materials, Data, Training, Skills, Knowledge) Consensus (E.g., Vision, Goals, Roles, & Responsibilities)

  5. Preparing for Change:Two Key Concepts • Diffusion of Innovation (Rogers, 2003) – Communication Networks • Stages of Concerns (Fuller, 1969; Hall & Hord, 2006)

  6. Communication Networks & Change Agents Diffusion of Innovation (Rogers, 2003) Innovators First to adopt a new innovation Early Adopters Adopt new ideas quickly, but only after reasoned consideration Early Majority They take more time & consideration in making an adoption decision Late Majority Slow to adopt; do so only when there is pressure or the need becomes very strong Laggards Very slow, and even resistant, to the adoption of new ideas

  7. “Diffusion” Big Ideas • Change takes place in a Social System and requires acts of communication • Innovators are first to adopt, but are less influential than opinion leaders. • Early Adopters are highest opinion leaders. • Information will travel faster when there are more lines or channels of communication and where there are more people.

  8. Hall, G. E & Hord, S. M. (2006). (Chapter 7) Understanding feelings and perceptions about change. Stages of Concerns

  9. “Stages of Concern” Big Ideas • Applied to individuals or groups. • Do not judge concerns of a personal focus. • Addressing personal concerns – dealing with issues other than the innovation. • Match PD efforts to proportion of concerns among personnel. • Use self-report data to anticipate “Task” concerns and provide matched technical assistance.

  10. In the beginning None of Beliefs, Skills, Knowledge All of Beliefs, Skills, Knowledge necessary to participate in systems change

  11. Over Time None of Beliefs, Skills, Knowledge All of Beliefs, Skills, Knowledge necessary to participate in systems change

  12. Goal None of Beliefs, Skills, Knowledge All of Beliefs, Skills, Knowledge necessary to participate in systems change

  13. Expect This

  14. So... • If different people respond to change differently and at different times…. • …and different people have access to different lines and types of communication…. • What data will guide how you allocate proportionally matched resources to the variability of staff needs in your district or school?

  15. Over Time None of Beliefs, Skills, Knowledge All of Beliefs, Skills, Knowledge necessary to participate in systems change

  16. Behavior Momentum • What structured planning and problem solving process are you going to use when you hit a barrier? • How will consensus and infrastructures be monitored and improved over time while implementing? • How can data be used to guide decisions about implementation? What data will you want to use?

  17. Session 1 Activity

  18. DLT Day 2 Session Directions See Handout: “Identifying School-based CCSS Needs” • Review/analyze SBLT Day 1 priorities for common and unique patterns. • Compare with DLT Day 1 priorities to increase district personnel awareness of CCSS. • What priorities/needs are common at the school and district level? • Discuss potential follow-up needed to support SBLTs priorities for ensuring awareness/understanding of CCSS among their staff.

  19. Principal PLC Directions • See Handout: “Identifying CCSS Resources & Supports for Your School” for Day 2. • Organize into small PLC groups • Goal: Develop “wish list” of what support are needed from district leadership to support school level priorities to increase school staff awareness/understanding about CCSS.

  20. Day 2: Identifying Priorities Related to implementation of CCSS at Your School/District Preparing for Team Planning at 4:45 PM – 5:30 PM

  21. Systems Change Implementation (E.g., Established procedures, Supportive policies, continuous improvement) Infrastructure (Eg., Schedule, Personnel, Materials, Data, Training, Skills, Knowledge) Consensus (E.g., Vision, Goals, Roles, & Responsibilities)

  22. Overview: Small Group Planning & Problem Solving Steps Identify the problem or goal in concrete, descriptive, behavioral terms Record all resources/ideas for resolving the problem or achieving the goal, and allbarriers that must be overcome or reduced. Select one barrier from the list Brainstorm strategies to reduce or eliminate only the barrier selected Design a concrete plan of action, specifying who, will do what, and by when Follow-up plan Evaluation plan – removed barrier selected in step 3? Evaluation plan – attainment of goal in Step 1?

  23. What to Expect? • School-based teams; District-based teams • Day 2 Planning Goals: • 5 min – As a team discuss and rate your staffs’ level of readiness for implementing CCSS on scale of 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest). • 25 min – Considering Reflection Journal responses, discuss and list as a team the top 2 most important things you have to do to implement CCSS with fidelity.

  24. Preparing for Day 2 5:00 PM Team-based Planning (Print Ready Files > Team Planning) • Schools: “8.2.1.SBLTCheatSheet.docx” “8.2.2.SBLTWorksheet.docx” • Districts: “8.2.1.DLTCheatSheet.docx” “8.2.2.DLTWorksheet.docx” • Prepare to work in assigned setting • Use Survey Monkey • Overview of process

  25. Survey Monkey Preview School Based Leadership Teams www.surveymonkey.com/s/CJF3CWC District Leadership Teams www.surveymonkey.com/s/7R3T3R3
