  2. General Laboratory Safety • Never leave power equipment “running” while unattended

  3. Know the location and use of all fire equipment in the laboratory

  4. Pay attention to what you are doing at all times

  5. Avoid loud talking, shouting, and other distracting behaviors in the classroom and laboratory.

  6. Do not run in the laboratory.

  7. Wear proper clothing in the lab. • No loose clothing, loose jewelry, or unsecured long hair. • No open heel or open toe shoes • Eye protection is required at all times • Special eye, face, or skin protection is required when performing certain tasks.

  8. Wear safety goggles at all time when in the lab and in other areas specified by the instructor. • Additional eye and face protection may be required when operating certain tools.

  9. Use guards and safety devices at all times.

  10. Radial arm saw equipped with an upper and lower blade guard

  11. Turn off power equipment immediately after use.

  12. Operate power equipment only on a one student at a time basis.

  13. Check power equipment for safety before putting it into operation.

  14. Avoid carelessness and/or horseplay. • These actions will not be tolerated

  15. Notify the instructor in case of: • Accident • Injury • Fire • Defective equipment or tools • Any prevailing safety hazard

  16. Use only those tools or machines in which you have completed safety instruction and passed a written test to become certified.

  17. Avoid laying tools and materials in walkways.

  18. Be sure you are familiar with all controls before using power equipment.

  19. Do not leave the laboratory or work area unless the instructor gives you permission.

  20. Color Coding • Red • Location of fire equipment • The stop button of electrical equipment • Acetylene lines and acetylene carts

  21. Red with yellow letters • Gasoline can GASOLINE

  22. Orange • Guards • Electrical control boxes • Hazardous areas

  23. Yellow • Adjustment wheels, knobs, and levers • Safety islands

  24. Yellow with diagonal black stripes • Areas where you might stumble, fall or strike against a hazardous object

  25. Blue • Large electrical panels or boxes • Out of order signs

  26. Green • Medicine • First aid supplies • Oxygen lines • Carts

  27. Ivory • Edges of tables and equipment

  28. Aluminum with black band • Waste container

  29. Aluminum with orange band • Container for oily rags and flammable materials

  30. Gray • Cleanup area

  31. Eye Protection • The State Department of Labor requires that anyone entering the mechanics laboratory while activities are in progress wear eye protection.

  32. Safety glasses are required at all times in the mechanics laboratory and in other areas specified by the instructor.

  33. The safety glasses used in the lab must have a manufacturer emblem and a Z87 logo. • The Z87 logo means that the safety glasses are industrial quality

  34. Equipment that requires special eye and face protection. • Arc Welding- welding helmet with a #10 filter lens and safety glasses • Oxy-Acetylene Welding- gas welding goggles or shield with a #5 lens • MIG/TIG Welding- welding helmet with a #12 lens and safety glasses • Stationary and Portable Grinders- clear face shield and safety glasses • Metal Lathe- clear face shield and safety glasses

  35. Hand Tools • Never cut toward yourself unless the tool is specifically designed for that type of cutting.

  36. Use tools of the proper size for the job. • Do not handle tools in a careless manner.

  37. Use only those files and rasps that are equipped with handles.

  38. Use the proper tool for the job and use it in the correct manner. • Example: Never use a wrench as a hammer.

  39. Keep tools clean for safety reasons and to extend tool life.

  40. Handle sharp and pointed tools with extreme caution.

  41. Secure work in a vise or clamp when sawing, welding, or other times when needed.

  42. Do not endanger other persons or co-workers in any way. • You are responsible for your actions at all times.

  43. Report all broken tools or items of equipment to the instructor immediately.
