What is PBL? • PBL stands for ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning’. It is a whole school initiative that involves the explicit instruction of desired positive behaviours and encourages students to apply their skills and knowledge in their everyday interactions with others. It is a proactive system with a focus on prevention. • By clearly and explicitly teaching students the desired positive behaviours, they are aware of the expected and appropriate behaviours within the school environment and the wider community.

We teach PBL at Mount Lewis Infants School through... • explicit lesson plans incorporating our school rules, We are safe We are respectful We are learners • the use of our school matrix that promotes common language amongst the staff, students and community. The desired positive behaviours are discussed with the students on a regular basis • colourful signage around the school grounds reminding students of the appropriate behaviours expected of them. This policy was developed in consultation with students, staff and the community of Mount Lewis Infants School in 2011. Focus values and school rules were developed after extensive consultation with all arms of the community. If children don’t learn the way we teach them, teach them the way they learn!
School Rules We are Safe We are Respectful We are Learners
PBL Policy All students will begin each term on ‘Level One’. Teachers will acknowledge students positive behaviours at the end of each week with a ‘PBL stamp’ on class chart. In a ten week term, students will need to acquire 9 stamps to be part of end of term reward day celebration.In an eleven week term, students will need to acquire 10 stamps to be part of end of term reward day celebration. When a student is moved down to level two, they are to remain on that level for one week before they are eligible to redeem their position at level one (refer to page 2).When a student is placed on level three, they are to remain on that level for two weeks before they are eligible to redeem their position at level two. Once a student returns to level two, they will remain on this level for an additional week before returning to level one.If students are unable to reach the stamp quota for the term, they are not eligible to participate in the end of term celebration. At the onset of each term, all students begin at level one. All decisions regarding the movement between levels are subject to change at the discretion of the PBL team and the Principal.
What behaviours warrant a change in levels? So what behaviours warrant a student to drop to Level 2? • Disruption to lessons • Physical, verbal or cyber bullying • Not following the 3 school rules - safe, respectful, learner (refer to expectations matrix for desired positive behaviours) • Inappropriate language use (swearing) • Rough play • Being untruthful So what behaviours warrant a student to drop to Level 3? • Violence and aggressive behaviour (Warrants suspension according to DEC policy) • Absconding • Continual physical, verbal or cyber bullying (Warrants suspension according to DEC policy) • Vandalism • Stealing • Repeated classroom misbehaviour (Warrants suspension according to DEC policy) • Bringing dangerous goods or weapons to school (Warrants suspension according to DEC policy) • Repeated refusal to follow school discipline policy (Warrants suspension according to DEC policy) NOTE:When an incident is reported, the teacher gathers evidence from all parties involved in the incident. This may also include witnesses. The teacher/Principal makes an informed, professional decision as to the action taken, based on the evidence gathered and the extent of the injury/situation/damage. All decisions regarding the movement between levels and/or suspension are subject to change at the discretion of the PBL team and the school Principal.
‘Louie Award’ System At weekly assemblies, teachers will be allocated three awards. Each award will represent the different focus areas of PBL: Safe Respectful Learner Students who receive these awards are seen to have demonstrated exemplar positive behaviours. Teachers can make reference to the common language on the expectations matrix when considering the behaviour of the student that is being rewarded. Students are responsible for the awards in their possession. Missing awards will not be replaced. Those students who are eligible to receive weekly awards, must be on Level 1 of the PBL behaviour system. 5 awards = ‘Silver Louie’ - Principals Certificate 10 awards = ‘Gold Louie’ - Principals Certificate and Louie badge
