  1. Census and Reapportionment Review Call to Order Mr. Lummel’s second period class is much bigger than Ms. Zeins’ second period class. Should his class get more supplies than Ms. Zeins’ class? Why or why not?

  2. Why do we take a census? • It measures the population in our country. • We need to know how many people live here so that our government can serve them. Total Population of Area: 27 people 5 PEOPLE 4 PEOPLE 8 PEOPLE 4 PEOPLE 2 PEOPLE 1 PEOPLE 3 PEOPLE

  3. Why is knowing the population important? ….and down. We need to know what happens when the population goes up…

  4. So what effect does population have? So the government is able to collect MORE tax revenue Let’s see what happens when population goes up… CALIFORNIA POPULATION Population goes UP And because it has more money, it can provide MORE services to the people.

  5. So what effect does population have? So the government is able to collect LESS tax revenue Let’s see what happens when population goes down… Population goes DOWN And because it has LESS money, it can’t provide the services that it used to.

  11. And don’t worry, these are EASY! Just follow these steps… This is all well and good, but… The majority of the HSA questions on this subject will ask questions about maps and graphs!

  12. STEPS: Locate the legend and figure out what it means. Figure out where population is going up or down. Figure out what that means for taxation and services. If population goes up, tax revenue and government services go up. If population goes down, tax revenue and government services decrease.

  13. If population goes up, tax revenue and government services go up. If population goes down, tax revenue and government services decrease. STEPS: Locate the counties and increased the most. Figure out what that means for tax revenue and government services. Do the same thing for the counties that decreased the most.

  14. Now, let’s practice this skill. Complete the worksheet with a partner. You have 15 minutes, and then we will go over it.
