  2. KAJAANINTULLI SCHOOL • INTRODUCTION   • The school is located in 175-year-old school buildings in the heart of Oulu, one of the most traditional and attractive school towns in Finland. Kajaanintulli is a special education school • for students who have difficulties in learning and behaviour, but who are of average intelligence.

  3. The school is part of the comprehensive education system in Oulu City and provides education based on the General Teaching Plan of Finland (or National Curriculum) -usually a student is given a place in Kajaanintulli school after long term evaluation, but in crisis situations very quickly if necessary -students come from around the City of Oulu, a bus fair or taxi is provided free of charge

There are both lower and upper comprehensive levels in the school, classes from 1–9. • The ages of the students range from 7–16 years. • In Kajaanintulli School there are also three work-shop classes for students who are talented in handicrafts or simply are interested in learning in workshop environment. Students train in ”real jobs” -woodwork vocational studies 2/3 years - auto repair shop motivation and readyness -handcrafts, design exploring ones capabilities

  6. The curriculum of Kajaanintulli school • The curriculum has been formulated for both lower and upper comprehensive schools. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is designed for each student. In the plan starting point, goals, strengths and abilities are made clear.  Features and goals of teaching in the school:  •  improving students’ individual skills, social skills and abilities •  adjustment to existing rules in the school and community • improving abilities to take others into consideration •  improving self-confidence •  strenthening self-control and concentration •  learning the basic cognitive concepts and skills • improving physical skills

  7. Why a separate special needs group? Inclusion vs. exclusion • The needs of children with emotional and behavioural difficulties are not well understood • Inclusion fails to meet the needs of these multiproblematic children. • form the largest and fastest growing special needs group.
