  1. Modified Barium Swallows and Fiberoptic Evaluations of the stages of the swallowing process By Eric Michaud Research in Allied Health Dr. Byington

  2. Statement of the Problem • Why is a procedure (MBS) considered the gold standard and is preferred over the alternate procedure of Fiber optic edoscopy which does not expose patients to harmful radiation?

  3. Research Questions • When evaluating swallowing disorders, which method do speech pathologists and why? • Is there a time when the speech pathologist uses the least preferred procedure and why? • Is there special training required to perform the MBS and FEES procedures?

  4. Methodology • The research design chasen for this project is the ethnographic research design. This design will aloww the researcher to visit the participants and conduct research in the field of study and in their native environment.

  5. Findings/Conclusions • The findings in the study were dramatically in favor of the MBS over the FEES procedure. The speech pathologists were only in favor of the FEES procedure when the patient was physically unable to participate in the MBS. This study concludes that the MBS is the preferred procedure simply because all stages of the swallow are observable through this technique.
