  3. Facts About the Skills ASTRONOMY The Maya believed the Earth was flat with four corners. Each corner was a direction. Each direction had a color. East was red, north was white, west was black, and south was yellow. Green was the center. POTTERY The Mayans were very skilled in the art of pottery. WEAVING The Mayans made blankets and ect with their skill of weaving. FARMING The Mayans had to be good farmers to feed there village.

  11. Mayan Art, • Art- The Mayan art is based on their religion and culture. The Mayans would work on woods, papers, plasters, obsidian, bones, shells, stone, and clay.   12. MAYAN AGRICULTURE • Agriculture- The Mayans were good famers. They would make paths for people who would make pottery and weaved things. Mayan pottery Mayan weaved cloth

  13. Obeying the Law, where they Explored, and Events • Obeying the law- They had a ruler where all public life was controlled by him. The ruler was the leader of the Mayans. • Events- The events were hypotheses of what would happen in the future. There is a calendar that they thought would have the right dates of disasters and other things.

  14. Recording and Communication • Recording- Mayan religion of recording was writing to keep track of the passage of times to record events. Those people who kept track of time were called “Day Keepers.” • Communication- Mayans communicated by trading things such as pottery, cloths, salt, honey, wax, and slaves. They communicated also by carving on a wet, paved circle on the wall.

  18. INVENTIONS • Some of the Mayans inventions were Numeric Calendars. • Giant pyramids. • A Writing System. • And Buildings.

  19. Facts about the Inventions. • The calendars were created in the year of 3114 B.C. • In 600 B.C. the Maya began building giant pyramids. • The Mayan invented the writing system in A.D.800. • The Mayan began building structures in A.D. 600.

  22. Hunting, Medicine, and Crops • Some crops of the Mayan were: corn, squash, beans, manioc, maize, cacao, chile, and bananas. • Hunting tools: Bows, arrows, traps, spears, and netting bags. Prey: Deer, wild pigs, rabbits, squirrels, turkeys, and other birds. • Medicine: Hmen are medicine men who used potions, chants, and traditional herbal medicines. Tobacco is a very important medical plant.

  23. Food and How Families lived • Mayan food was cooked and served in pottery utensils. Maize was made into tortillas. Tortillas were the main food of the Mayans along with stews and vegetables. • Families lived in houses with hay roofs and walls made of stone or mud. Boys in the Mayan society learned farming from their fathers. From the ages 4-5, the boys stayed in communal houses with others the same age. Girls stayed with their mothers and learned how to cook, how to take care of their house and family, how to spin, weave, and how to make clothes
