  2. Who went? 1 School board member 3 elementary principals 3 middle school principals 1Director of Elementary Education ACPS in China

  3. Why these staff? Each of these staff have the responsibility of either introducing, implementing, programming and/or budgeting for language program(s). ACPS in China

  4. Who paid for it? The College Board and Han Ban paid for air, food, travel and cultural visits ACPS paid the registration fee Staff paid their own fare to Newark and N.Y. ACPS in China

  5. ACPS in China • Where in China? We were in Beijing for three days, Wuxi in Jiangsu province for 3 days and then back to Beijing for two more days.

  6. ACPS in China Why China? • Hong Kong and Shanghai are now global leaders, supplanting New York • China is the United States biggest foreign lender, holding more than 17 trillion in U.S. money • While the U.S. deficit has increased 102% percent since 2000, China’s surplus has increased by 841%

  8. Currently we have Chinese at the middle school, Level 1 and Level 2 They were first offered in 2008-2009 In order for ACPS students to continue studies in Chinese, we have an online VDOE course at Minnie Howard and T.C. Williams ACPS in China

  9. Because of the lack of qualified teachers and cost, some districts rely only on these virtual programs for the delivery of Chinese programs And still others, like districts in North Carolina, have created no less than 24 partnerships with Chinese schools in order to cost effectively facilitate language instruction ACPS in China

  10. Conversely in China, Primary, Middle and High Schools are creating partnerships with schools all over the world ACPS in China

  11. Schools in the Jiangsu Province have created partnerships with 30 countries and have organized 1000 students to go abroad on study tours More than 70 schools in this province have employed foreign born teachers ACPS in China

  12. Why travel to China? To create partnerships with educational leaders, both U.S. and Chinese, to expand opportunities for students To learn about Chinese culture and China’s current academic structure ACPS in China

  13. What kind of partnerships? Chinese Guest Teacher program AP Summer Institute for ACPS teachers to travel to China National Chinese language conference (Wash DC in 4/2010) Study tours for students ACPS in China

ACPS in China Ingredients of a Successful Partnerships with Chinese Schools • Create a system that offers many forms of support (one size does not fit all) • Identify the goals of the partnership (fluency, cultural awareness, global understanding, etc.) • Identify a dedicated person at each school in which you have a partnership to oversee the mission

  15. How do you know all this now? Classes, meetings, and more meetings in China with educational leaders from all over the world. ACPS in China

  18. Next steps Team will be meeting with ACPS Language Dept Chair in January Arlington County interested in potential partnership to save costs in Chinese language expansion ACPS in China
