  1. Learning About the Different Procedures in Cancer Care Most cancer patients are faced with the prospect of surgery, which they will see a lot of during their treatment, but the types of procedures vary widely in scope, intent, scope, outcome and other different factors. While most surgeries are designed to remove as much as cancer as possible, others may have different goals. Below are certain examples of surgeries commonly performed on cancer patients.

  2. Diagnostic And Staging Procedures A biopsy is an example of a surgical procedure to diagnose a tumour’s type and stage. It may range from needle biopsy, to a major procedure involving anaesthesia. Primary And Curative Surgeries The goal of these is to leave patient without any sign of the disease. This surgery is usually performed when the cancer is found in only one part of the body and no evidence suggests it has spread locally or metastasized. Treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be involved.

  3. Prophylactic or preventive measures Women with an inherited mutation in their BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are at a higher risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. They may choose to have a prophylactic mastectomy and/or have their ovaries removed to reduce their cancer risk. Counselling is recommended, however, before reaching such a decision. Cytoreductive or debulking surgeries These procedures are designed to reduce the size of tumours or visible masses prior to a chemotherapy treatment or radiation therapy.

  4. Palliative Procedures Palliative care includes procedures that relieve discomfort and improve quality of life. For example, a surgery to remove obstructions in the colon or lungs after cancer treatment. Reconstructive or restorative surgeries Reconstructive surgery is intended to rebuild or restore a part of the body that has been disfigured by surgery.
