  1. Resumes…

  2. The Rhetoric of Resumes The goal of a resume is to get you an interview! • An effective resume will possess the following (in order of importance): • Summary of skills and achievements (choose your descriptions and verbs intelligently and honestly: it will all come out in an interview!) • A persuasive argument (i.e., “Hire me!”) • Every word and each piece of information should be based upon what the audience needs, not what you want. • Choose your phrases carefully: there is a thin line between confidence and arrogance • A balance between convention (how you will fit in) and uniqueness (what you can offer)

  3. Your resume is one of the few writing products that you will draft and revise in your life that needs to be perfect. • Yup: the goal is zero typos or misspellings. • Your resume should be no longer than one-two page. It should be pleasant to look upon, clear in every respect, and grammatically parallel. • Remember, the goal is to stay off the "no" pile!

  4. By using the library and other resources (print and/or online), you will choose a job for which you can imagine yourself applying after you graduate. You will write a one-page resume tailored for this job. If you have drafted a resume, feel free to start with what you already have and revise it for this rhetorical situation. 5. In addition to correctness and clarity, arrangement is an important part of this assignment. Given all the information you could provide a potential employer, what is most important? How should your experiences be categorized?

  6. This assignment is also very much about ethos: how can you use rhetoric and design to present your best self -- without hyperbole or boasting? How do you communicate a self that is not just intelligent and accomplished, but also interesting -- a person someone would want as a co-worker?

  7. Some questions to consider as your begin to draft your resume: • 1. What is the specific job for which you will compose resume? • 2. What central facts about this job will guide you in making choices for your resume? • 3. Who is your audience? What do you know about who would review these materials? • 5. What is your purpose in presenting yourself to this audience?
