The assignment was piloted in: Two Exploring Planet Earth sections (GEOL-101)** • WIC, Writing Intensive Course (15) & non-WIC (20) • Majors: Education (8), Business Administration (6), Criminal Justice (6), Environmental & Resource Sciences (4),Communication (3), Management (2), Visual Media (1) & History (1) One Introduction to Environmental Science section - 30 students

  6. Tasks/ Prompt As a student, reflect & identify concrete evidence in the form of personal stories that supports your decisions about: • Why are you attending College? • Why did you choose your major? • What are you doing in class to achieve your goals?

  7. Steps (WIC only, WIC & non-WIC) • Pre-test: feelings, role & goals about Writing • Self-reflection & Pre-writing = Draft 1 • Peer-review workshop & peer-feedback + Instructor or Writing Specialist feedback = Draft 2 (non-WIC) • Workshop on How to incorporate feedback = Draft 1.5 • Reverse Outlining workshop = Draft 2 • Revision of Draft 2 at the Writing Center = Draft 3 • Live grading = Draft with Decisions supported by evidence • Post-test about Writing

Was the assignment useful? • “No, if I have to write four pages then is like an English class when we are asked to write about ourselves and our experiences” • "I already knew why I was here” • “Somehow, it is similar to essays used for scholarships” • “It helped me to define my choices” • “To compare and contrast high-school and college daily life (and) how they help me towards my daily goal”

Relief from science because I’m not good at science” • “Only related to science because my major is physical science” • “The assignment relates to science because it asks why” • “Yes, we learn how to do more in depth research using ourselves as an example because we know ourselves best”

How can this assignment be potentially useful For students: • Transition from extrinsic to intrinsic motivations • Improve writing skills • Seek evidence to support decisions • See themselves as scientists? • Build on confidence through metacognition • Collect evidence to write applications for scholarships, jobs, etc. For instructors/ advisors/ career-services: • Know our students motivations and struggles to better address them • More aware students?
