  2. Gen 24: AWife for Isaac • Abraham lives in Canaan among Canaanites • Did not want Isaac to marry a Canaanite • B/C when they intermarry with unrighteous they pick up bad habits: worshiping false gods. 1

  3. Isaac Gets Married • It’s “love at first sight” and Isaac marries Rebekah, daughter of Nahor. • After a long time of being childless Rebekah finally conceives. • She becomes pregnant with twins 2

  4. Two Nations fight in her womb • The twins seem to be fighting inside her • Gen 25:23 This foreshadows: two nations in her womb which will be divided 3

  5. Esau 1st born Was red and hairy Name sounds like the Hebrew word for “red” Dad’s favorite Was a hunter Father of the Nation of Edom or the Edomites Jacob 2nd born He came out grabbing his brothers heel Name sounds like the Hebrew word for “he takes by the heel” Mom’s favorite Father of the Nation of Israel Gen 25: Jacob and Esau 4

  6. Esau Sells His Birthright • Gen 25:27-34 • Esau sells his birthright for a bowl of Jacob’s stew. • He cares little for his birthright and only cares about now • Esau later ends up marrying two Canaanites 5

  7. Jacob “steals” the birthright • Isaac is old and blind and ready to die. • He wants to give Esau the blessing “inheritance/ birthright” • “Go make me some stew and I’ll give you the blessing” 6

  8. Rebekah’s Scheme • Rebekah makes some stew for Jacob to give to Isaac • Jacob dresses in the goat skin so he will be hairy enough and wears his brother’s clothes 7

  9. Esau’s receives a prophesy • Isaac shares a prophesy with Esau instead of giving a blessing • Esau’s nation (Edomites) will serve Jacobs nation 8

  10. Gen 27:41 Jacob leaves • Esau plots to kill his brother out of anger • Jacob runs to Haran to stay with Uncle Laban 9

  11. Jacob’s Ladder • He dreamed of a stairway or ladder from the ground to the sky • Gen 28:23-15 God renews the Abrahamic covenant • He names the place Bethel or “House of God” 10

  12. OOPS! Wrong Bride! • Jacob meets Rachel & falls in love • He offers to work for 7 years to get her as a bride • After working, Laban gives Leah instead without Jacob knowing 11

  13. Jacob and Rachel • Laban makes a deal • If Jacob works another 7 years he can have Rachel • Jacob agrees to this and becomes a polygamist 12

  15. Gen 32: Jacob Gets a New Name • Jacob moves back to Canaan • Gen 32:23-32 • He wrestled in the night with an angel • At the end of this struggle the angel renames him Israel • Israel means “he who strives with God” 14

  16. Remember Bethel? • Jacob returns to Bethel (Jacob’s Ladder) and here God purifies him and renews the covenant • Gen 35: 11-12 New Creation Imagery • “Be fruitful and multiply” • “Nations will stem from you” • “Kings shall issue form you” • “I will give you this land” 15

  17. Joseph’s story

  18. Joseph is the Favorite • Israel and his son’s settled in the land of Canaan • Joseph was loved the best and because of that he was given a long tunic by Israel • His brothers hated him because he was loved more 16

  19. Gen 37:5-8 Joseph’s 1st Dream • The brothers sheaves of corn bow down to Joseph’s sheaf • This makes the brothers upset 17

  20. Gen 37:9-11 Joseph’s 2nd Dream • The sun (Israel) and the moon (Rachel) and the stars (his brothers) are bowing down to him • This makes them hate him more 18

  21. His brothers plot • The see him coming to the pasture • They want to throw him in a cistern • Reuben suggests not to kill him • They later sold him to Ishmaelites who were headed to Egypt for 20 pieces of silver 19

  22. Joseph’s life in Egypt • His dreaming saves him from his life in jail • He starts working for Potiphar one of Pharaoh’s chief stewards • Potiphars wife get Joseph in trouble and he gets thrown in jail 20

  23. Joseph out of jail • His dreams save him from jail • He interprets he royal cupbearer and the bakers dreams • Then he interprets Pharaoh’s dream which was a warning of famine 21

  24. Joseph: model of forgiveness • Powerful Christ like figure because he forgives • Provides food for his family

  25. Joseph as a “type” of Christ • Rejected by those who should have loved him • Sold for silver • Saved the world by providing “bread” (Eucharist) • Forgives those who persecuted him
