  1. Transition to a new uTCA system Proposal to start the discussion • The CMS Trigger group needs to gain both experience and confidence with the uTCA system before it is decided to remove a working system and replace it with a new one. • A way needs to be found to enable the running of the new system in parallel with the current system during LHC data taking. • The available installation time is expected to be of the order of 6 months or less. Hence, the new system must be well tested and commissioned outside USC-55 to insure that the commissioning time is minimized. • This talk is an attempt to address these issues. 3. Towards design 1 • The GT-to-GCT links change from Infiniband to Opical 2 GBps. • This will happen well before Sep. 2009. • The GCT uTCA Matrix system (1 Crate) is commissioned in a rack next to GCT-Main and GT. • This should happen in 2010 • GCT Source Card transmit their data using the current 2 GBps links to: • uTCA Matrix System (Electron+Jet data) • GMT Opto-GTI (Q, M bits) • The uTCA system sends (latency fee) the data to the GTI Opto-GTI and the LHC trigger works as before. • The uTCA crate runs duplicate algorithms in parallel with GCT and sends the data to GT via again 2 GBs optical links • We should be able to have this in 2011 • The uTCA trigger crate will see the same data as GCT so in principle the physics benefit is limited but there are significant gains in terms of experience and confidence gained. 6. Towards Design 2 and 3 • After running in parallel the uTCA system and the current system up to 2011 we start departing from the current design: • The Current GCT crate retires at 2011. • A new uTCA GCT executes the GCT functions. • Additional uTCA crates are added to the system in preparation of commissioning the new system. • After this point our schedule is correlated with: • HCAL Upgrade plans. • ECAL Upgrade plans. • Progress in uTCA designs within the trigger group itself • It is clear that at this point (2011) we should be bring up a large uTCA system in some integration facility (904?). • All these does not include replacing the online software which will be equally challenging and needs a special workshop to take place after the hardware plan is made.
