  1. Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BWSD)Canada Study Grant for the accommodation of students with permanent disabilities (CSG)

  2. BSWD What is the BSWD? The BSWD is a Bursary for Students with Disabilities. The BSWD is funded by the Government of Ontario. Eligible full-time or part-time students with permanent or temporary disabilities may receive up to $2,000 per academic year.

  3. CSG What is the CSG? The CSG is a Canada study grant for the accommodation of students with permanent disabilities. The CSG is funded by the Government of Canada. Eligible full-time or part-time students with permanent disabilities may receive up to $8,000 per academic year.

  4. The BSWD / CSG and Technology Computer software, hardware, and other assistive devices are deemed to be appropriate BSWD / CSG expenses, on the basis of whether they are required by a student due to the impact of their disability on their participation in university or college education.

  5. The BSWD / CSG and Technology Technology must be recommended in your disability-related documentation in order for it to be considered a legitimate BSWD / CSG purchase. You may be required to provide additional supporting documentation, from an appropriate diagnosing professional, prior to applying for bursary funding.

  6. Application Criteria You must qualify for provincial OSAP in order to be eligible to apply for the BSWD, and federal OSAP in order to be eligible to apply for the CSG. These two sources of funding are accessed from a single application.

  7. Application Process In order to apply for BSWD or CSG funding for cost of equipment, you must first meet and discuss this with your advisor at Student Disability Services. If you are eligible to apply for BSWD / CSG funding for specific technology, your Disability advisor explain the application process, and guide you through the application form.

  8. Application Process You may be required to gather additional application documents, such as price quotes, and submit these to your advisor. Once your advisor has received all of the necessary paperwork, they will forward your BSWD/ CSG application to the Financial Aid Office on campus.

  9. Application Process If your application is approved, your BSWD / CSG cheque will be mailed to the address on your application form. Your advisor will inform you of exactly which items to purchase, for which vendor(s).

  10. Important Information Once you have received your bursary cheque, you have 30 days to make your equipment purchases. You must submit receipts to your Disability advisor for all of your BSWD / CSG purchases. Failure to provide receipts will prevent you from accessing OSAP funding during subsequent semesters, in addition to other financial consequences.

  11. Important Information Extra BSWD / CSG funds must be returned to the Financial Aid Office. The amount of your bursary will be considered as taxable income on a Revenue Canada T4A form.
