  5. A bus based strategy “Proposals for a bus-based rapid transit system are at the core of providing this step change in bus transport.” (para 5.2.1)

Some of the detail • A core highway based (bus) rapid transit system • Introduction of red routes on core corridors • Improvements to local bus services and infrastructure including extension of Bus Quality Partnership initiatives, improved interchange facilities and passenger informationsystems • Consideration of the most appropriate public transport technologies

  20. Minor Schemes Funded Through LTP2 Air Quality • AQMAs including monitoring • £50,000k has been specifically allocated for air quality • Many of the other measures have the potential to benefit air quality

  21. Targets and Monitoring Targets are based on • Mandatory Performance Indicators e.g. no. of people killed or seriously injured on roads • LTP indicators e.g. accessibility to hospitals, no.of cycling trips • Optional targets relevant to local circumstances

  22. Air Quality Targets of LTP2 • LTP8a – To reduce the proportion of land area within AQMAs to nil by 2009/10. • LTP8b – Road Traffic within AQMAs

  23. In conclusion Transport is a means to an end, not usually an end in itself. When we need to travel we make choices. Our choices can affect air quality
