  1. The How’s of New Forms of STI – Datasets Lance Vowell DOE/OSTI – IIa STIP 2011 5/5/2011

  2. Purpose of Announcement Notice 241.6 To provide to the DOE-OSTI metadata needed to identify/announce publicly available datasets resulting from work funded by the U.S. DOE or performed in DOE facilities.

  3. Dataset DOIs • The information submitted via the AN 241.6 allows OSTI to assign Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to datasets • OSTI registers AN 241.6 DOIs with DataCite (www.datacite.org) as a service to researchers.

  4. Dataset DOIs (cont.) This value-added step: • Facilitates visibility • Helps ensure long-term preservation • Supports better linkage between DOE’s published research results and the underlying data

  5. Dataset DOIs (cont.) • Creator(s)/Principal Investigator(s) and the primary contact person who provide email addresses in the AN 241.6 will be notified via email of the DOI assigned to each dataset. • The AN 24.16 also allows users to provide the DOI if one has been assigned prior to the dataset being announced to OSTI.

  6. OSTI sends to DataCite nightly DataCite Registers DOI DataCite submits DOI registration validation back to OSTI OSTI updates metadata record with new DOI Metadata record with new DOI sent to ECD & DDE Creator(s)/PI(s) and primary contact notified of assigned DOI New 241.6 Dataset records in E-Link and DOI assigned by OSTI

  7. Dataset Dissemination • Immediately available in the Energy Citations Database (ECD) http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/ • Available in the DOE Data Explorer (DDE) beginning Fall 2011 http://www.osti.gov/dataexplorer/

  8. Required Fields on AN 241.6 • Dataset Type • Dataset Title • Creator(s)/Principle Investigator(s) • Dataset Product Number(s) • DOE Contract Number(s) • Originating Research Org • Publication/Issue Date

  9. Required Fields on AN 241.6 (cont.) • Sponsoring Organization • URL where the dataset is hosted • Contact Information • Name and Position • Organization • E-mail Address

  10. Dataset Type Specifics • Animations/Simulations – Animations and simulations resulting from runs of computer models or similar software. • Genome Data – Information that is numeric or alpha-numeric in nature (such as gene sequences) or a specialized mix of text and non-text information conveying results of genetics/genome research • Interactive Data Map(s) – A non-static interface and the GIS data and/or shape files that generate it • Numeric Data – Data primarily expressed with numbers; other content is secondary and supporting. • Still Images or Photos – A collection of images or photographs that are produced by a scientific instrument or that convey scientific results of experiments

  11. Additional 241.6 Specific Fields • Contributor Organizations • Dataset’s File Extension • Software needed to utilize dataset • Dataset Size (number of files or images; Kb/Mb)

  12. 241.6 Specifics • Initial set up for grantees • Quickly submit directly to OSTI • For now, Lab researches could technically submit the same way • Site Ownership is determined by the submitted DOE Contract Number and set to the appropriate awarding office (ORO, CHO etc.) • Originating Research Organization will distinguish which Lab submitted the AN

  13. 241.6 Specifics • No Distribution/Access Limitation • By definition all datasets submitted to OSTI are publicly available • No Releasing Official required • OSTI wants to work with STIP to determine the proper workflow for Lab submissions and how the AN 241.6 would support that.
