  1. Developing literacy (communication), language and numeracy skills with learners with learning difficulties using person centred approaches.

  2. Who am I? • Development Officer, NIACE • One of the original PECF trainers • Trained as a Person Centred facilitator • (using Essential Lifestyle Planning) The Skills for Life Improvement Programme is delivered on behalf of the Quality Improvement Agency by CfBT Education Trust and partners

  3. Whilst writing • There was a tension for me. I was worried about ‘reducing’ the concept of person centeredness within a one day training session. • My thinking is very much influenced by my experiences. The Skills for Life Improvement Programme is delivered on behalf of the Quality Improvement Agency by CfBT Education Trust and partners

  4. Work that NIACE has done on PCP/PCA shows; …..some providers are engaging with person-centred planning in creative and dynamic ways. However, many in post-16 education and training remain unclear in their understanding of person-centred planning and the part education should be playing in this process. Person-centred planning is often mistakenly identified as the same as Individual Learning Plans or one to one tutorials to discuss what an individual wants to learn. NIACE, 2006 The Skills for Life Improvement Programme is delivered on behalf of the Quality Improvement Agency by CfBT Education Trust and partners

  5. For me, to deliver this training effectively trainers must have a deep understanding of PCP/PCA. The Skills for Life Improvement Programme is delivered on behalf of the Quality Improvement Agency by CfBT Education Trust and partners

  6. What are Person Centred Approaches? • ……are ways of commissioning, providing and organising services rooted in listening to what people want, to help them live in their communities as they choose. The Skills for Life Improvement Programme is delivered on behalf of the Quality Improvement Agency by CfBT Education Trust and partners

  7. What that means for FE? • A change in attitude……… • A shift in power ………… • The lsda research showed it was far easier to sign up to the ‘idea’ of being person centred than to actually put it into practice. The Skills for Life Improvement Programme is delivered on behalf of the Quality Improvement Agency by CfBT Education Trust and partners

  8. Update on latest work/thinking regarding learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities….. The Skills for Life Improvement Programme is delivered on behalf of the Quality Improvement Agency by CfBT Education Trust and partners

  9. Foundation Learning Tier (QCA) • The concept of a ‘bottomless entry level’ – if this happens in reality it will mean that previous learners who were seen as below entry level will now be recognised by QCA as being in entry level………… The Skills for Life Improvement Programme is delivered on behalf of the Quality Improvement Agency by CfBT Education Trust and partners

  10. Learning for Living and Work Teachers (LLUK) • New teaching standards, inclusive • Application of standards (Domain C) written for teachers working mainly with learners with learning difficulties • CPD units will be written The Skills for Life Improvement Programme is delivered on behalf of the Quality Improvement Agency by CfBT Education Trust and partners
