  2. Symbiosis Organisms have a close relationship where at least one benefits.

  3. 1. Mutualism = • Both benefit • (+, +)

  4. Ex: Bacteria in large intestine

  5. Moray Eel with Cleaner Fish The moray eel gets a clean mouth & the cleaner fish gets a meal.

  6. The antelope gets rid of parasites & the oxbird gets a meal.

  7. The hummingbird gets food & the then distributes pollen for the flower.

  8. 2. Commensalism = • 1 benefits, other not affected • (+, 0)

  9. The dorsal fin of the remora is modified into a sucker with which it forms a temporary attachment to the shark. When the shark feeds, the remora picks up the scraps. The shark makes no attempt to prey on the remora.

  10. Cattle stir up insects as they eat grass. Egrets hang around and eat insects.

  11. 3.Parasitism = • Parasite benefits, host harmed • (+, -)

  12. Ex: Fleas on a dog

  13. Roundworms are common in puppies. It attaches itself to the inside of the puppy’s intestine and feeds on nutrients in the puppy’s blood. The puppy may have abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea.

  14. The parasitic barnacle, Thompsonia littoralis, grows inside a host crab like a root system, eventually breaking through the joints to produce egg sacs as shown in the photo at right. The parasite does not kill the crab but affects its reproductive system so it becomes infertile.

  15. Tapeworms that live & feed in digestive tracts. The host loses the nutrients it needs to the tapeworm.

  16. Athlete’s foot

  17. The Caribbean soldierfish is host to the parasitic isopod attached to its head between its eyes. The fish has no way to remove the isopod, which feeds on its body tissues.
