  2. Welcome to Economics • Your teachers: Mr Elmas – Head of Department Miss Patel Mr Mcginty You will have a combination of two of these teachers

  3. AS year • Unit 1 • Competitive Markets: How they work and why they fail • Introductory unit • Basic model of Demand and Supply • Unit 2 • Managing the Economy • Looks at national economic policy

  4. AS Year • Each Unit is marked out of 80 • Your mark is then converted to UMS • Your UMS score determines your AS grade • Not possible to get an A* • We then use a combination of your AS grade, and observations on work ethic to give a predicted grade which you use for your UCAS application • To get an A* prediction you need 90+% UMS at AS plus a fantastic work ethic!!

Lower 6th Economics • Testing, testing, and more testing!! • Progress tests every 3 weeks • These tests will be based on cumulative knowledge • Start off short and will increase as our knowledge progresses • System of self review against targets so you know how to progress towards your target grade • Pass mark = 56% C grade

  6. A2 Year • Unit 3 • Business Economics and Economic Efficiency • Looks at how businesses operate and market structures • Unit 4 • The Global Economy • Looks at how different countries interact and whole world issues

  7. A2 Year • Unit 3 is marked out of 80 • Unit 4 out of 100 • Unit 3 is worth 80 UMS whilst Unit 4 is worth 120 • Higher weighting attached to Unit 4 as more difficult • Now possible to get an A* - need ≥180 UMS i.e. 90+%

  8. Opportunities within Economics • Economics Society • Meet every Tuesday lunch • Run by a committee with two joint presidents • Target 2.0 competition • Enter each year • Team of 4 with 2 reserves

Expectations • Turn up each week! • If you miss a lesson see your teacher to catch up on any work missed • Print off and bring in the powerpoint of each lesson from moodle, you will be informed of which to bring in • Annotate your notes – a lot of information won’t be on the slides • Keep up to date with economic news – vital! • Participation – don’t be passive in your education!

  10. Things to do • Print off the course specifications from moodle or the Edexcel website for Units 1 and 2. • Guest access to moodle via password: AdamSmith • Read through these and put them in your folders. • Print off the first powerpoint for each unit and bring these into your lesson
