  1. In The Footsteps Of The Master:The Life and Times of Jesus Christ Jesus Makes Bold Claims April 19, 2009 www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  2. The Father and Son • John 5:19-21 • “19Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. ” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  3. For Discussion • What does this passage say that Jesus is able to do? • Only that which the Father shows Him • Why will the Father show Jesus greater works? • The Jews understood God as the One who raises from the dead • Deut 32:39 • 1 Sam 2:6 • 2 Kings 5:7 • But the son gives life www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  4. Judgment • John 5:22-24 • “22For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, 23so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.24Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  5. For Discussion • Who now has the power to judge? • What has He been given this power? • What does Jesus’ claim amount to? • How do those who believe in Jesus “pass from life into death”? • Extra Credit Question: • When does eternal life begin? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  6. Jesus’ Bold Claims • Jesus makes bold statements about His relationship with the Father • The Son can do nothing except what the Father has shown Him • The Father loves the Son and shows Him all things • The Father restored life from physical death; the Son from spiritual death • The Father has given all judgment to the Son, so that all will honor Him • Those who do not honor the Son do not honor the Father • Those who believe the Son, believe the Father and receive eternal life www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  7. A Quotation • This is “an act of the most extraordinary and unique courage ... He must have known that to speak like this was to court death. It is His claim to be King; and He knew well that the man who listened to words like this had only two alternatives – the listener must either accept Jesus as the Son of God, or He must hate Him as a blasphemer and seek to destroy Him. There is hardly any passage where Jesus appeals for men’s love and defies men’s hatred as He does here.”William Barclay www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  8. For Discussion • The Son is the physical manifestation of the Father • Immanuel: “God with us” • Why did Jesus pick this moment to identify Himself as the Son of God? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  9. Next Week • Jesus Makes Bold Claims (Part 2) Questions? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
