  9. You are a MINISTER • The Greek word, diakonos can be used as a verb, “to serve,” or as a noun, “a servant, attendant, minister, deacon” and is used in the New Testament to describe ALL Christians • “So then, men ought to regard us as servants (diakonoi) of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God.” - 1 Corinthians 4:1

  10. You are a MINISTER “I am a minister and servant of Jesus Christ.”

  11. What is ministry? DEFINITION – Ministry is using whatever God has given me to serve Him and the needs of others

  12. “Looks like the church’s volunteer program didn’t go over too well.

  13. Dr. Robert Banks (Fuller Seminary) • A volunteer offers to serve while a minister is called to serve • A volunteer’s time is his or her own; a minister’s time belongs to God • A volunteer is motivated by need and recognition; a minster is motivated by the Spirit and community • A volunteer’s service is a matter of choice, while a minister’s service is based on the Lordship of Christ • A volunteer can opt out of service at any moment, for any reason; a minster gives his or her life in service to God

  14. 1 Peter 2:9 • “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

  15. We’ve been saved to SERVE, not to SIT!

  16. Rick Warren(Saddleback Church) “What God has made me to BE determines what he intends for me to DO… God would not give us inborn talents and temperaments, spiritual gifts and all sorts of life experiences and then not use them!”

  17. Five Factors Influence and Shape us – • Spiritual Gifts • Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve (diakeneo) others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. – 1 Peter 4:10-11

  18. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.1 Cor. 12:4-7

  19. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.– 1 Timothy 4:14

  20. Five Factors Influence and Shape us – • Spiritual Gifts • Heart (my interests and passions)

  21. But our passions can to be turned to good or evil • James 3:14 warns about “selfish ambitions in your heart.” • So scripture tells us to turn them to good and “serve the Lord with all your heart” (1 Samuel 12:20).

  22. Five Factors Influence and Shape us – • Spiritual Gifts • Heart (my interests and passions) • Abilities

  23. Five Factors Influence and Shape us – • Spiritual Gifts • Heart (my interests and passions) • Abilities • Personality

  24. Five Factors Influence and Shape us – • Spiritual Gifts • Heart (my interests and passions) • Abilities • Personality • Experiences

  25. We all had … • Spiritual Experiences • Educational Experiences • Ministry Experiences • Painful Experiences

  26. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. – 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

  27. How do I find my “gift?” • Explore the possibilities

  28. How do I find my “gift?” • Explore the possibilities • Experiment– try different ministries/get involved

  29. How do I find my “gift?” • Explore the possibilities • Experiment– try different ministries/get involved • Evaluateyour effectiveness – “Am I growing? Am I becoming more competent?”
