Develop and maintain appropriate firearm related regulators Ensure effective control processes and procedures regarding firearms Reduce and eradicate the illegal pool and criminal use of firearms Ensure prevention of crime and violence through public and civil awareness and social design Regional and Sector Cooperation Legislation, regulations, standing orders national instructions Control processes currently located within the Central Firearm Register and to Registrar of Firearms Operational crime combating approach Crime prevention initiatives i.t.o public awareness and education campaigns Coordinated planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of firearm initiatives in the Region SAPS FIREARMSTRATEGY

PREPARATORY PHASE • Design and implementation of Designated Firearms Officers (DFO) model • Establishment of infrastructure • Computer equipment • Vehicles • Upgrading of Firearm Registration Centres and Police Stations • Staff establishment • Enlistment of personnel • Training • Function purification • Design and development of additional functionality on Firearms Register System • Develop and design process and procedures for all provisions contained in the Firearms Control legislation • Promulgation of all provisions relating to Accreditation – 1 July 2003

READINESS ASSESSMENT PHASE • Evaluation and assessment of all aspects designed, developed and implemented during preparatory phase • Identification and rectification of dysfunctions • Allocation of additional resources • Training • Establishment of a National Firearms Call Centre – (012) 353 6111 • Conduct information session on implementation of the Firearms Control legislation • Provinces : 9 • Areas : 43 • Divisions : 7 • Total number of officers / members briefed : 3 143

OPERATIONALISATION PHASE – 1 JULY 2004 • Firearms Implementation and Monitoring Centre activated • Functions • Monitoring of overall implementation of the Act • Providing of Management Information on Implementation • Providing of support on tactical and operational information • Identification of dysfunctions • Provincial and national taskings for immediate interventions
