  1. Study Overview, Data Quality and CoverageFinal Presentation, ESTEC, 12.12.2006Christoph Kiemle, A. Fix, M. Wirth, A. Dörnbrack Technical Support for the Acquisition of Water Vapour DIAL and Aerosol Measurements: Water Vapour Lidar Experiment WALEX 2005

  2. Agenda Overview • Lidar instrument, • Falcon platform, • flight tracks, • measurements overview, • ECMWF analyses overview.

  3. WALEX 2005: Objectives • Perform long-range lidar measurements in subtropical and tropical regions during transfer flights of the DLR Falcon between Germany and Australia. • Provide backscatter, depolarisation and water vapour vertical cross sections with high spatial resolution. • Analyse dynamical processes with signature in water vapour and aerosol observations with the help of ECMWF analyses. • Estimate extinction coefficients and optical depth for selected cases. • Derive relative level of background radiation. • Deliver data for future performance simulations of space DIAL.

  4. Water Vapour Data Quality Systematic errors ( ~ 5%) • Water vapour absorption line cross section (5 % estimated) • Laser spectral impurity (1 - 2 %) • Atmospheric temperature uncertainty (1 %) • Rayleigh-Doppler absorption line broadening (< 1.5 %) Random error(~10%) • controlled by spatial resolution: trade-off • ~10% for 5 km hor. and 0.5 km vert. res. for nadir direction throughout troposphere • ~10% for 15 km hor. and 0.2 km (near range) to 2 km (far range) vert. res. for zenith pointing • higher in dry regions (strat. intrusions) • lower in humid regions (if online not saturated)

  18. Summary • Transfer flights to and from Australia: • total ~30 h lidar data = 21.600 km = 74% of total distance. • 9 Local flights with total ~30 h lidar data = 21.600 km. • Zenith pointing during ferry to Australia and all local flights. • Nadir measurements on the ferry back. • Particle backscatter and depolarisation at 532 and 1064 nm. • H2O profiles from 10 to 17 km (upward), 0 to 11 km (downward). • ECMWF model analyses interpolated to flight route: • p, T, H2O, winds, pot. temp., pot. vorticity.
