Thursdays during 2nd period • The teacher will assign a writing prompt for you to complete during DEAL. • The writing prompt will require you to read your novel and answer the question based on the novel that you are reading during DEAL. • The writing assignment is due on the followingThursday at the beginning of class.

  3. What does lunch look like? • Every student MUST have a novel to read during lunch. • Students can read their novel OR work on completing the weekly writing assignment.

  4. Writing prompt • What is one choice that a character in the novel has had to make during the pages that you read this week?   8. Writing Prompt • What is one choice that a character in the novel has had to make during the pages that you read this week? Explain the situation surrounding the choice, choose a quote from the text as evidence that the character had to make a choice, and explain the quote.

  9. Student Response Cal has been sent to SeaPines for treatment because she cuts herself. She cuts herself because her brother's illness has put pressure on her family and this is the only way she feels in control. In this section of the text, Cal's family visits her at the treatment center, but Cal has decided she will not speak to anyone - family, doctors, or peers. Her brother Sam asks her to play Checkers but in her head she is thinking: "Sure, I wanted to say. Sure. I willed myself to speak, but nothing happened. I sent commands from my brain to my mouth. Nothing (page 19)." She decides to play and communicate only by nodding.

  14. Student Response A Cal has to decide if she want to talk to her brother when he comes with her parents to visit the home that she is staying at. Her brother has many medical problems and so she decides to cut herself. She want to tell him that he is ok and she will eb fine to but she cant talk.

  15. Student response b Cal is the main character in this novel. She was sent to live way from her family but she loves her bother. She is having trouble speaking but she deosn't know why so she is trying to talk to her brother and figure out why she can't come home to live with him but she knows he is sick. "I sent commands from my brain to my mouth. Nothing (page 19)." She decides to play checkers instead.

  16. Student response C Cal cuts herself because her brother's illness has put pressure on her family and this is the only way she feels in control. While at the treatment center where her family has sent her, she chooses not to speak to anyone, but when her family comes to visit, she must decide if she will finally communicate with her parents. “My mother kept rambling on and on about her job, my brother’s road to recovery, my dad’s long hours at work, as if she was actually talking to me” (page 17). Cal decides to walk away, down the hall because she knows her mother isnt’ ready to listen.
