What is a Dynasty? • A Dynasty in China refers to a period of rule by a family or clan. • Chinese history is not as neat as is often described and it was rare for one dynasty to change peacefully into the next. Dynasties were often established before the overthrow of an existing regime, or continued for a time after they had been defeated. The last 2 Dynasties in China were the Ming (1368–1644)and the Qing(1644–1911) Dynasties.

  6. Manchu-Qing Dynasty • Qing Dynasty, with its capital Beijing, was the last ruling of Dynasty of China and ruled from 1644 to 1912. Although the Manchus were not Han Chinese and were strongly resisted by the greater population, especially in the south, they had assimilated a great deal of Chinese culture before conquering China Proper. Realizing that to dominate the empire they would have to do things the Chinese way, the Manchus retained many institutions of Ming and earlier Chinese derivation.
