  1. Lesson H-2 Body Planes and Directions

  2. As part of the health curriculum, you will be asked to read and interpret graphs and charts on a daily basis. • A component in our curriculum is recognizing directional planes, as well as the body cavities and the organs they contain. • One of the most important aspects of documentation and patient assessment involves the use of appropriate anatomical terms. • Using imaginary lines, the body can be separated into sections or regions. (Appendix A)

  3. Locate each of the following organs and identify corresponding quadrant. (Appendix B) • 1. Liver RUQ • 2. Stomach LUQ • 3. Pancreas LUQ • 4. Appendix RLQ • 5. Gallbladder RUQ

  4. Vocabulary (Appendix D) • y-axis = vertical axis • x-axis = horizontal axis • Ordered Pair = Numbers that represent a specific point on a graph. Written in the form (x,y), where x represents the direction/distance on the x-axis, and y represents the direction/distance on the y-axis. • Origin= Point where x and y axes intersect – the ordered pair for this point is (0,0). • Quadrants = The four regions created from the intersection of the x and y axis – note that axes are NOT part of the quadrants.

  5. LUQ = Left Upper Quadrant • RUQ = Right Upper Quadrant • RLQ = Right Lower Quadrant • LLQ = Left Lower Quadrant • **Complete Student Coordinate Worksheet (D1)

  6. Identify which part of the body is located in each quadrant. (Appendix E) • 1. LLQ organ(s)? • 2. RUQ organ(s)? • 3. LUQ organ(s)? • 4. RLQ organ(s)?

  7. Organ Location • Using ordered pairs, locate each of the following organs and identify • corresponding quadrants: (Appendix E & E1) • Ordered pair Health Quadrant Math Quadrant • Liver • 2. Appendix • Identify which part of the body is located at each ordered pair. • Name of organ • 1. (2,5) • 2. (4, -2) • **Complete other side of Student Worksheet (F). Once completed, review with class, then complete worksheet (G,H).
