  3. Benchmark Assessments Schedule October 3rd—5th Benchmark 1 Reading and Math December 17th—19th Benchmark 2 Reading and Math March 12th—14th Benchmark 3 Math Only

  4. Who is tested? • All students in grades 2-8 will be tested, except for special needs students who are designated on their IEP as taking an Alternate Assessment such as AIMS-A.

  5. Site Test Coordinator’s Responsibilities • Attend district level training on testing guidelines and administration • Provide training for school staff on testing guidelines and administration • Ensure all staff administering tests has a signed testing security agreement • Verify receipt of testing materials • Distribute, collect and verify all test materials on testing dates • Monitor for proper test administration • Communicate with district test coordinator any issues, concerns or questions regarding the school site.

  6. Teacher Responsibilities • Participate in training activities scheduled at your site by the Test Coordinator. • Sign and return the Testing Security Agreement. • Adhere to test administration security procedures. • Follow test administration directions. • Receive test materials from the Test Coordinator. • Verify the quantity of materials received (before the test date). • Request from the Test Coordinator any additional material required. • Verify on the testing dates that the students have received the correct test answer document with bar codes with their name and for the appropriate subject (M for Math and R for Reading).

  7. Teacher Responsibilities Cont. • Provide full information in the correct location for the students who do not have a bar-coded answer document. • Distribute, collect, and verify all test material on the testing dates. • Provide appropriate testing accommodations. • Examine each student bubble sheet to ensure that the answer bubbles are darkened appropriately. Darken any bubbles which are incompletely darkened or too light. • Assemble and return all test materials to the Test Coordinator.

  8. Test Materials • Test booklets are sent directly from the print shop to schools. • Counts are based on current or projected enrollments. • Verify the number of tests and answer documents you have received from the test coordinator. • Answer documents are printed close to the test window to provide the most current student information. These you will need be picked up by the testing coordinator or designee at D.O. prior to the beginning of testing. • Blank copies for students without barcodes will be included with these materials. • All test booklets are consumable!! Students may write and highlight in the booklets and are encouraged to do so. 

  9. Answer Documents The math test must be taken on the document labeled M next to the grade and reading on the document labeled R next to the grade. Example: Students Name Student ID # Test ID # Teacher Info. This means: Faulkner-SN:101-HR:B139- SectionID:0300000039-TEST:0607 Pre 8R Teacher = Faulkner School # = 101 (Landmark) Homeroom = B139 Test = 0607 Pre 8R (Year 2006-2007, Pre Summative, 8th Grade, Reading)

  11. Answer Documents without Barcodes Answer documents without barcodes should indicate: • Full name of the student (NO nickname) • Grade • Test subject • Student ID # • Teacher name (Where the results will be posted) • School Name • What test it is, Reading or Math.

  13. Answer Documents for Multi-Age Classrooms The nature of how data resides in SASI forces us to print several answer documents for students in multi-age classrooms. Please use only the answer sheets that correspond to the correct grade in which the student is enrolled. For example, Mrs. Smith teaches a 4-5 multi-age classroom. She will receive 4th and 5th grade answer documents for Jaime, a 4th grader. She will only use the 4th grade documents. She will shred the 5th grade documents.

  14. Test Security • All teachers should have a completed test security agreement on file. • The summative pre and post test booklets are to be treated as secure documents. • The items in these tests are designed strictly as • summative instruments and not intended for instructional purposes. • Benchmark test items remain “open” for @2 weeks following each benchmark administration. • The items in these tests may be used in the classroom for test talks and other instructional purposes to review content and test-taking strategies with students.

  15. Administering the test 1. Each student should have a sharpened #2 pencil, a test booklet and the answer document that matches the test being taken, i.e., if the student is taking a math test, they have the corresponding answer document for that test. • Have the student open their test booklet to the directions page if there is one. Ask the student to read silently as you read the directions aloud. Ask if the students have any questions. • For the reading benchmark remind them to read the passage before answering the questions. Have them put their finger or place marker on item number 1 in the test booklet and item number 1 on the answer document. Monitor the class to make sure the students know where to record their answers. Continue to monitor where the students record their answers throughout the testing period.

  16. Administering the test Cont. 4. For the second grade reading test, teachers will get a teacher’s copy, telling them what they can and cannot read out loud to there students. They will recive these with there answer documents. 5. For second grade students, the teacher may choose to have the students record their answers in the book. After testing the teacher would record the answers on the bubble sheets. If the teacher chooses that option, tell the 2nd grade student that they will record their answers in the book by circling the correct answer. 6. Explain to the students they may write or highlight in their test booklets. Encourage students to show their work in math and they may use some kind of graphic organizer like a thinking map in reading to help them think about the passage. This test is not timed and the students may have as much time as they need. As the students take the test, actively monitor as they work.

  17. All testing accommodations allowed by AIMS are allowed for benchmark testing. For a complete version please refer to the district website.

  18. Universal Accommodations • Extended testing time on the same day • A separate location or study carrel • Preferential seating • Special Lighting • Special furniture or pencil • Student wears noise buffers ( after directions) • Familiar test administrator • Repeat directions • Color overlay

  19. If a student is disabled by a broken arm or hand, it is permitted to: • Record or dictate multiple choice responses to a scribe. • Accommodations for ELL Learners in addition to those above: • More breaks • Small group administration or one-on-one testing • Clarify or simplify language in directions in English • Read aloud Math test items in English • Provide a word for word published paper translation dictionary • Exact oral translation of directions as needed upon student request 

  20. Accommodations for Special Education and 504 students • More breaks and/or several shorter sessions • Small group administration or one-on-one testing • Clarify or simplify language in directions in English • Read or sign directions • Exact sign language interpretation of math or writing items • Magnification device • Amplification equipment • Place marker use • Read aloud Math test items in English • Large print edition of test • Use of abacus for blind students • Record or dictate multiple choice responses to a scribe

  21. Returning the test • Separate all material as scorable and non-scorable. Scorables are answer documents to be scored. Non- scorables are blank answer documentsand test booklets. • When returning scorable answer documents: • Separate documents by teacher then by test with a color sheet of paper. • Separate tests with bar codes from those without barcodes by using a blank sheet of paper. • DO NOT include blank answer documents with the scorables • DO NOT use paper clips, envelopes, post-it notes or staples • Examine each student bubble sheet to ensure that the answer bubbles are darkened appropriately. Darken any bubbles which are incompletely darkened or too light. • The testing department will not be responsible for correcting or changing any scantron sheets. • Return to the test coordinator • Contact test coordinator within 10 days if scoring errors are suspected.  

  22. Returning Non-Scorable documents • Stack blank answer document separately from scorable documents. • Summative tests (administered at the beginning and end of the school year) need to be stacked and returned to the test coordinator at the end of testing. • Benchmark test administered at the end of each quarter may be kept for two additional weeks after testing for “test talks”
