  1. Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM Accommodating Creative Knowledge – Competitiveness of the European Metropolitan Regions within the Enlarged Union Rationale European cities want to be competitive. In the last years it became more and more evident that along with the traditional ‘hard’ location factors (such as avai-lability of capital or labour, infrastructure, tax regimes and other institutional context), new ‘soft’ location factors that are mainly related to attracting the required ‘talent pool’ would deserve increasing attention. ACRE aims to assess the impact of the emerging ‘creative class’ and the rise of the ‘creative industries’ ACRE is funded by the Sixth Research Framework Programme of the EU.Prof. Dr. Musterd chairs the consortium of 13 research institutions in Western and Eastern Europe (see map). The Amsterdam region is analysed as local case study in the Netherlands. ‘Local partnerships’ in each region, which include both policy-makers and members of the related business community and constitute a European Council of policy makers and creative and knowledge experts, support this study. Research Question What are the conditions for creating or stimulating ‘creative knowledge regions’ in the context of the extended European Union? More particularly, what is the role of so-called ‘soft’ factors in creating and stimulating ‘creative knowledge regions’? Schedule and work packages (10.2006-09.2010) I. Analysis of paths of creative knowledge regions and the policies appliedII. Survey of creative and knowledge workers in Amsterdam and other partner citiesIII.
