Truman Doctrine • Truman announced this doctrine during a speech on March 12, 1947 • Stated that the united states will help all free peoples who were threatened by outside forces or armed minorities • Primarily targeted at keeping the USSR out of Turkey and Greece • US gave Greece 400$ million to stop KKE (communist party) • US gave Turkey 100$ million to stop USSR from taking control of the Dardanelles • Precursor to the domino theory/containment policy • Often seen as the start of the Cold War • Drastic change from isolationism to interventionism • Solidified US as world power

  3. Integration of armed forces • By the end of WWII the Army is the largest employer of minorities • Issued as executive order 9981 on July 26, 1948 • Originally Truman tried to pass several racial reform acts through congress, but southern senators threatened to filibuster • Conformative in nature • Lots of resistance to desegregation, often times in a violent manner • Took a significant time to accomplish • February 2, 1948 Truman tells armed forces to begin making plans to desegregate armed forces. • July 26, 1948 Truman issues executive order 9987 • 1953- Army announces that it is 95% integrated
