  1. Nationalism • Devotion to the interests or culture of one's nation. • The belief that nations will benefit from acting independently rather than collectively, emphasizing national rather than international goals. • Aspirations for national independence in a country under foreign domination. • News Clip

What is the difference between country, state,nation and nation state? • A State ( note the capital “S” ) is a self governing political entity. • A state ( small case “s” is usually a division of a federal state ( Such as the United States of America ) • The term State can be used interchangeably with country • A nation is a tightly knit group of people who share a common culture • A nation state is a nation which has the same borders as a state

What defines a State or an independent country: • Has space or territory that has internationally recognized boundaries ( boundary disputes are OK ) • Has people who live there on an ongoing basis • Has economic activity and an organized economy. A country regulates foreign and domestic trade and issues money

What defines a State or an independent country continued • Has the power of social engineering ( ie. education ) • Has a transportation system for moving goods and people • Has a government which provides public services and police power • Has sovereignty. No other country should have power over the country’s territory • Has external recognition

  5. Is Scotland a State? ( Country ) • Let’s use the criteria for what constitutes a State and determine if Scotland is a State (country ). 1. Does it have space or territory that are internationally recognized boundaries? Yes. Scotland has 78, 133 square kilometers in area. 2. Does it have people living there on an ongoing basis?

  6. Is Scotland a country continued? • 2. Yes. Scotland’s population is 5, 062, 011 ( 2001 census ) 3. Does it have economic activity and an organized economy? Does it regulate foreign and domestic trade and issue money?

Scotland definitely has economic activity and an organized economy; It even has its own GDP. • BUT Scotland does not regulate foreign or domestic trade since the Scottish Parliament is not authorized to do so. • The United Kingdom Parliament is authorized to do so.

  9. Is Scotland a State continued.. 4. Somewhat. • The Scottish Parliament is able to control education, training and social work ( but not social security ). • This power was granted to Scotland by the UK Parliament

  11. Is Scotland a State continued.. • 4. Somewhat. • Scotland itself has a transportation sysytem but the sytem is not fully under Scottish control. The Scottish Parliament controls some aspects of transportation, including the Scottish road network, bus policy and ports and harbors while the UK Parliament controls railways, transport safety and regulation. • Remember: Scotland’s power was granted by the UK Parliameny.

Is Scotland a State continued.. • Somewhat. • The Scottish Parliament has the ability to control law and home affairs ( including most aspects of criminal and civil law, the prosecution system and the courts ) as well as the police and fire services. • The UK Parliament controls defense and national security across the United Kingdom. • Remember: Scotland’s power was granted by the UK Parliament

  17. Is Scotland a State Continued... • No. • Scotland does not have external recognition nor does Scotland have its own embassies in other countries.

  18. Scotland is NOT an independent country, nor is it a State. • Neither is Wales, nor Northern Ireland, nor England itself. • Scotland is however a nation of people living in an internal division of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
