Recap… • When Simon realizes what the “Beast” really is, he runs to tell the other boys. • The boys, in their frenzy, focus their fear on Simon as he crawls out of the trees. • The combination of the storm, the darkness of the night, and the boys’ own fear makes it impossible to recognize Simon and avoid killing him.

  3. Things to Notice… • IMAGERY: Weather. Storm brewing over island; turmoil brewing in boys/relationships. • IRONY: The Dead Parachutist. Simon discovers the truth, but the boys see only an illusion, and Simon is killed. • THEME: Manipulation. Jack understands that providing meat is the best way to claim leadership. Even Ralph and Piggy are drawn to the feast that Jack has prepared.

Things to Notice… • RITUAL: The Pig Hunt. • a) boys are encouraged to become part of ritualistic reenactment of the hunt • b) ritual becomes means to overcome fears of the Beast • c) Simon comes out of the woods just in time to become the focus of the ritual • d) the boys, caught up in the frenzy of their dance, perceive Simon as the Beast • e) Simon is beaten to death; his body washes out to sea

Things to Notice… • RITUAL: The Mob. • a) all the boys are somehow involved in what happens to Simon • b) even Ralph feels that he has participated despite Piggy rationalizing that Simon was “batty” • The breakdown of socialized behavior continues with Simon being murdered in cold blood. • “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!”
