    2. Writing to Describe You will have a choice of 4 questions. You only answer one question. Answering a describe question will give the best chance of showing off all the language techniques you know. It is harder to get high marks on the explain or inform q questions. You have 45 minutes to answer this question. You need to spend 5 minutes planning at the start and 3 minutes checking your work at the end.

    3. Use a variety of language techniques PPPASS SAM: P = Pathetic Fallacy P = Personification P = Power Verbs A = Alliteration S = Sounds S = Smells S = Similes A = Adjectives/Adverbs M = Metaphors

    4. Descriptive Writing Ideas Try to vary the way you start sentences Use connectives to link ideas Use paragraphs Include a variety of language techniques If you want to build tension or excitement try using 2 short sentences after each other. Include some rhetorical questions.

    5. Practise Describing Setting The next six slides show pictures of setting and character. One useful way of revising is to practise describing each one. Try to use as many of the PPPASS SAM techniques as possible.

    12. Approaching the Exam Questions Remember if you are writing in first person (I), you do not have to writing as yourself. You can be in role so you can lie/embellish on the truth! If the question asks you to describe what you did in the summer holidays, instead of describing a week spent in Sutton, you can lie and pretend you went to New York, an exotic beach or rugged mountains in the Alps. As long as you have enough ideas to allow you to describe, it does not have to be something you have actually experienced. It is easier not to use speech if you are writing a story. Stick to a first person description unless you are very confident.

    13. Past Questions Describe a nightmare world. Describe a time when you felt afraid. Describe yourself (remember the examiner will never meet you, so you can make things up). Change can be good, bad or a mixture of both. Write about a time in your life when you experienced change of some kind. Describe what happened and explain how you felt about the change.

    14. Revision Brainstorm and plan each past question. At home, write one of your plans up as a proper and full answer try completing it in timed conditions (45 minutes only)
