  3. Summary (Listen) • Sundiata = First great king of Mali • Conquered Ghana • Improved Agriculture • Took power from Mansas • Had political + religious power.

  4. Beginnings of the Empire • -Sundiata Mali’s first strong leader • Conquered by bad king • Rebelled with huge army and gained power • Began conquering nearby kingdoms.

  5. Improvements in Mali • Conquered Ghana • -Took over gold/salt trade. • Cleared fields for crops • Introduced cotton • Used conquered slaves • Used soldiers not fighting to farm
