  2. Conjugating verbs • What is the point of conjugating verbs in Spanish? • We CONJUGATE verbs in order to have subject-verb agreement. • It changes based on WHO is doing the action!

  3. Connecting: • We also conjugate verbs according to WHEN the action takes place (tense) • The preterite tense is used to describe an action completed in the PAST. • Just like in the present tense, we conjugate verbs in the preterite by dropping the –ar, -er, -ir and adding the appropriate endings.

  4. Yo & Tú forms of –ar verbs • Ejemplo: • Hablar – to talk / speak • Yo  drop –ar and add -é Tú  drop the –ar and add -aste • Yo hablé I spoke Tú hablaste You spoke

  5. Práctica Write the correct conjugation of the verbs & their English translations. Yo (escuchar) Yo (participar) Tú (practicar) Tú (contestar)

  6. Práctica Conjugate the verbs with the correct endings & translate to English Yo (escuchar) – escuché Yo (participar) - participé Tú (practicar) - practicaste Tú (contestar)- contestaste

  7. Yo & Tú forms of –er & -ir verbs • Ejemplo: • Barrer – to sweep Describir – to describe • Yo drop –er/-ir and add -í Tú  drop the –er/-ir and add -iste • Yo barríTúbarriste • YodescribíTúdescribiste

  11. Ir- to go • The verb ‘ir’ means to go has an irregular conjugation in the preterite. • Yo fui = I went • Tú fuiste = you went • ejemplo= Yo fui al centro comercial I went to the mall.

  12. Hacer- to do / to make • The verb hacer is also irregular when conjugated in the preterite tense. • Yohice – I did / I made • Túhiciste – You did / You made Ejemplo: Yohice la tarea. ¿Hicistetúejercicio? * How is hacer irregular?

  13. Práctica Translate: I went to class. (ir) You ate a pizza. (comer) I drank milk. (beber) You participated in class. (participar)

  14. Respuestas • I went to class. • Yo fui a la clase. • You ate a pizza. • Tú comiste una pizza. • I drank milk. • Yo bebí leche. • You participated in class. • Tú participaste en la clase.
